Background:   By 1978-9 The Boys Next Door were the most experienced, popular and musically-mature of Melbourne’s punk and post-punk bands.  The core members – Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Phill Calvert and Tracey Pew – had been joined by Rowland S. Howard on guitar in 1978.  The Boys Next Door released an album (Door Door) under the Mushroom label in 1979 (recorded in separate sessions in mid-1978 and early 1979).

After the release of Door Door The Boys Next Door transferred to the independent label, Missing Link Records, and took on Keith Glass as their manager.  The tracks for the Hee Haw EP were recorded during July and August 1979 at Richmond Recorders in Melbourne, engineered by Tony Cohen.  The five-track EP was released in December 1979. 

The Hee Haw EP represents a musical departure from the relatively conventional punk/pop songs on Door Door.  The EP introduces a more abrasive, rhythmic and exploratory sound that was further developed when the band re-located to the UK (and changed their name to The Birthday Party).

The tracks from the original Hee Haw EP were re-released in 1988-9 as part of a compilation of early recordings under the name of The Birthday Party.  This album was also called Hee Haw.  The record for sale is the original 45rpm 12-inch EP released in December 1979.

Condition:  The Hee Haw EP for sale here is one of the initial pressing of 500 records (which included an insert sheet).  The quality of the complete package – vinyl, label, sleeve and insert sheet – is good to very good.  

The only blemishes that can be discerned are:

• the insert sheet has a small stain near the centre.
• the sleeve has a number of small, barely noticeable spot-stains (front and back); there are crease-marks in several of the corners; slight deformations in a few places along the sleeve’s open edge; an imprint of the record can be discerned. 
• the vinyl has a few scuff marks or light scratches; the record plays without apparent crackles. 

The condition can be summarised as:

·         Vinyl: VG+ (possibly EX)

·         Label: NM

·         Sleeve: VG+ (possibly EX)

·         Insert Sheet: EX

Grading categories:

·           MINT: Unplayed – record, sleeve, inner sleeve and any inserts are all as new, and label has no spindle hole wear.

·           NM: Known to have been played but vinyl is virtually pristine.  Label almost as new but indication of record being played may be visible at spindle hole.  Sleeves almost perfect.

·           EX: Vinyl is free of scratches but may have scuff marks.  Slight wear may be present at spindle hole. Sleeve has slight wear but nothing significant.

·           VG+: Vinyl will have just a few light scratches but will play without crackles or any serious sound problems; label may have some wear marks.  Sleeve will have easily visible wear.

·           VG: Expect some light scratches; loss of some sheen on the vinyl; easily visible wear at spindle hole; perhaps a name neatly on label or sleeve; a touch of surface noise; fairly significant sleeve wear.
