Born January 3, 1939. Born in Wellington, New Zealand. A saxophonist known as an original member of Nucleus. He has performed with many big jazz and rock musicians such as Mike Westbrook, Neil Ardley and Keith Tippett.
Self-taught to master the saxophone. Started full-scale performance activities in New Zealand in the latter half of the 1950s, and has been active in dance bands such as Bob Paris Band. Dave MacRae, who later traveled to England and was active mainly in the Canterbury scene, was also enrolled in the group.
Moved to England in 1964. Backed many blues / rock groups, including Alexis Korner ’s Blues Incorporated. Soon after, he got into the jazz scene, and in 1969 he participated in a series of masterpieces "Marching Song" by The Mike Westbrook Concert Band.
At the end of 1969, he joined Ian Carr's new group Nucleus. He left the band for a while in the mid-1970s, but soon returned and continued to play an active role as a core member until the 1980s. At the same time, he was in the backing band of Maynard Ferguson, and is also active in the free jazz scene such as Centipede, a compilation album aimed at the fusion of rock and jazz, and Spontaneous Music Ensemble, which is presided over by John Stevens.
In the latter half of the 1970s, he was mainly active in New Zealand network groups such as Geoff Castle's group Paz and Strange Fruit, Billy Kristian and Dave MacRae's fusion band Pacifi Eardrum, both of whom were members of the late Nucleus in his hometown.
Returned to Japan in 1981 and released three albums with the jazz-funk band Space Case. He also formed his own leader group, The Brian Smith Quartet, with Castle and Kristian, and left the album "Southern Excursion". After that, he continued his activities centered on the local jazz scene, such as producing an album under the name of solo.
