Right folks, I bought this very record myself on the first day of its release at HMV in Leeds, England- So I KNOW its a first issue/pressing and according to the many web sources out there it is "variant 3".
The detailed dead wax matrix lettering is as follows;-
Side 1 - CL1-2-A1 CBS-S CLASH-3A timtom Side 2 - CL-1-2 B1 CBS-S-CLASH-3B timtom Side 3 - CL 3-4-A2 CBS-S-CLASH 3 C2 timtom Side 4 - CL-3-4-B2 CBS-S CLASH 3-D2 ty TRACK 5 IS " TRAIN IN VAIN"
Train In Vain is only listed in etching on side 4, it is not listed on the label or sleeve. The first issue/pressing - ie this one, comes with two record/disc paper inserts (28mm x 28mm).
Detailed Description;
Outer Sleeve - Near Mint- tiny white dot to bottom left corner- it really is miniscule. The rear has some very faint yellowing across the whole rear. But this is now 40 years old ok ! Inner Sleeves - Near Mint- no scratching or dints BUT there is one 2 inch gap to sleeve 1 where the glue has come loose- rather than re-glue it I have left it as is, does it affect anything- well no why would it- The new owner can decide whether they wish to re-glue it or leave it alone. Both Discs - are Near Mint. Ok I have to admit this but I never connected to this album- well I was a big progger !?! So it has hardly been played since new- that is a truth folks ! If possible (I ran out of photos to show you) you could zoom in on any of the record photos and you will see there is NO spindle wear at all, no scratching, no wear and tear. Both discs play like brand new. OK the vinyl is not the thickest I have ever seen, maybe 100gm- I dunno ?? But it sounds really wonderful played on my Rega P7 deck.
It has also just been professionally cleaned and looks like its brand new again.
It has been kept in the medium weight protective outer in my music room over the past 40 years and is over all a wonderful example of this now sought after post punk classic, its just a fine, fine record. It will be packed very carefully to ensure it arrives with you in perfect condition.

Oh by the way any strange markings you happen to see in the vinyl photos are simply reflections of my living room ceiling LED lights -  sorry but I cannot get rid of the darn things wherever I sit ! They are not actual markings on the vinyl.
