Description
Up for bid is a recording of "The Elvis Presley Story" 12 hour radio broadcast that originally aired on radio stations coast to coast on a Sunday in October, 1971. It is on 4-1800 ft. reel to reel tapes at 3/3/4IPS. For a set of tapes that is not taken directly from "master tapes" (not pre-recorded), these tapes sound excellent at 3 3/4ips and have reversing foil added. I was 25 when this aired and missed recording it, but 47 years later, it brings back a lot of memories.
This set of tapes are very well done and are a very rare recording of this broadcast presented by Watermark Inc. and IS NOT a recording of the 5 record box set of the same name that was released in 1977, and the quality is such that sounds like could have been taken directly from the recordings used on the radio instead of from over-the-air.
Some tapes have a portion near the end of a side that has other songs not on the show, but as far as I could determine, there is no missing segments of the radio show because at the end of tape 3 the recorded segment goes to the end of the tape and ends in the middle of a song, but then that entire segment is repeated at the beginning of tape #4 - nothing is missed. It sounds too good to be done by the average radio listener. The tapes are edited extremely well and sound crisp and clear with no voids or background noises.
It is the most in-depth documentary of Elvis I've ever heard and sounds as good as any pre-recorded tape. There are interviews with over 70 people, dozens of rare tapes and about 150 songs and so much information about Elvis, and of course was done just 6 years prior to his death on August 6, 1977.
If somebody had the foresight to set up a tape to record this show, it was most likely on cassette as reel to reel tape decks were used only by a small fraction of the overall population, and is why (I think) this is a very rare item. The program ends about 3/4 through the first side of tape #4 and then there is about an hour and half of hit songs many from the 60's from The Beatles to Brook Benton.
The program was narrated by Wink Martindale.
The tapes are in their original Scotch brand blank tape box with photos added.
