~~~ Originally released in 1983, In the Raw was the fourth album from underground US metal band The Rods, which featured former Elf guitarist David "Rock" Feinstein (cousin of the late Ronnie James Dio). The Rods always seemed to exist just under the radar, but put out a series of totally rockin' & kicking heavy metal albums in the `80s before metal went glam.

After the more polished Wild Dogs, The Rods took a rougher, harder-edged approach on this album. In the Raw is a gritty, grimy, unapologetically heavy metal album. Judas Priest and Black Sabbath seem to be the main influences, which is always a good thing. On a few songs there a nice melodic hard rock vibe (think Triumph or maybe early Def Leppard) to the songs, but for the most part it's all about heavy guitar riffs, heavier rhythms and a fist-pumping metal attitude. Leadoff track "Hurricane" and the rocking "Go For Broke" and "Hot City" are my favorite tracks, but the whole album rocks hard.

When the album came out in 1983 US METAL was already about "GLAM, so "In the Raw" didn't exactly make The Rods famous, but it is a very strong heavy metal album that holds up pretty well today. If you're a fan of classic hard rock and heavy metal, you definitely need some Rods in your collection !!
