So, you'd quite like a great playing original LIB from the time of release? Only problem... so does everyone else! What's the middle ground here..>? Does one have to shell out a shed load of $$$ for a great 1st? Or is there an alternative route on the audio? Well, there is 1 alternative route which can get you great '69 audio, and MUCH better value for money....>> READ ON.
A genuine boxed stereo copy from Xmas 1969 [a technical 1st issue]. 1st issue in that this LP would have been available for purchase whilst the album charted over the winter period. And this is why these early boxed copies are worth tracking down - they offer far better value and were pressed on identical vinyl and often at the same time the late unboxed copies were pressed. Question... so how does one identify a Xmas 1969 copy - when many of the reissues look very similar. Well, there are plenty of indicators...as detailed here. Firstly, any copies from late '69 should be noticeably chunky - they should feel more like 60's stock. When Decca re-designed the label to feature a box Decca logo - the earliest copies exhibit a hang-over from the earlier unboxed design. Look at the text at the foot of the label - notice how it mentions 'the Decca Record Company' on the one line. As they started producing more boxed copies during 1970 the 'THE' jumps up to the end of the previous line. This is giving away the signature of an early Xmas copy. Matrix 1W/5W - the same as the late unboxed copies. Then we get to the cover and, again, it needs to have certain attributes for a Xmas 1969 copy. Sticker on the front advertising the poster, a pinched spine, and format indicator peep hole on the rear. There was no requirement for the peep hole from early 1970. We also have an original and bespoke LIB inner sleeve. NO POSTER - I'm afraid.
Vinyl (Ex/Vg+) In lovely condition and has only seen light careful use. Under close inspection I can only make out a couple of slightest marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of minor deviations. Intros and inbetweens are nice and quiet and the audio comes across with excellent clarity. A cracking copy and you can hear that you're close on to those original masters. Excellent energy and detail. LIB on a great copy is a really lush presentation. Thankfully there's minimal background exhibiting. All I can detect was just a touch of low-level background in the mega-fussy 'Love In Vain' intro & quietest moments of 'Silver', and the French horn intro to YCAGWY. All minor and difficult to eliminate entirely on any copy. Overall some cracking audio on what I regard as THE high-tide mark for the STONES. Addictive as hell and highly accomplished. Think of the VFM element. Think of the vintage. This LP is a cracker...
Cover (Vg+) Not quite up to the standard of the vinyl, but more than presentable - and the genuine article. The front is unusually flat and shiny - likein' it! There's a crease top left and one thumbnail. The rear seems to have avoided the ageing process which is so common on this title. The main thing to be aware of is the pen scribble in red up in the top left. But in all other respects very tidy indeed. A few stress creases on the spine - but the text is fully legible. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Ex-) Usually found in a right ol' state. This one seems to have avoided the ageing process. No splits.
