The Smiths - 'Girlfriend In A Coma' Rare Grey Sleeve 12" - 1987

The vast majority of The Smiths' 1987 UK single 'Girlfriend In A Coma' were issued in the familiar green and black sleeve in the 12" format and grey-tinted for the 7" equivalent. For reasons unknown, a few copies of the 7" appear to have been printed in the green-coloured sleeve and a few 12"s have grey sleeves. These 'anomalies' were listed at Numbers 19 and 20 in the 2005 Smiths 'Top 100' collectables list and were each estimated to have a value of 75.00 at the time. This is a chance to obtain one of the 12"s which has been mistakenly pressed in grey and black. It should be noted that this is not one of those auctions for a regular copy with just a 'band' of the wrong colour at the edges; this is a fully mispressed version whereby the whole of the front of the sleeve is grey and black and there is no green at all. Examples which are fully misprinted, as this one, are very rare and do not go on sale very often. Not only is this a rare sleeve, but it has been kept in superb condition and is therefore an extremely collectable example (see below).The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, having been played just a few times but being very well looked after. The vinyl retains its glossy sheen and has just a few light 'hairline' surface marks which only become visible if the record is held to the light. The original black inner sleeve is intact and undamaged, with no seam splits and no significant creases; it shows only very minor signs of handling. The all-important mispressed outer sleeve is somewhere between strong excellent and near mint condition, having only one very mild crease towards the top left corner, which does not spoil the appearance, and only the mildest of corner wear. The spine and all edges are sharp and unworn and there are no seam splits. At first glance the sleeve appears immaculate and it is an extremely well-preserved example of this highly rare sleeve.
