Description

THIS is an original, official poster measuring approximately 24" x 12" (60 x 30cm) that was printed for Rough Trade in 1987 to promote The Smiths’ album The World Won't Listen.

Please see below for a detailed description of the condition.

This is one of THREE original Smiths posters in this month's listings.

I'll be listing around 90 indie promo posters, flyers & postcards from the 6th to the 12th of this month, with auctions ending from Tuesday 13/9. You might find something else you'd like if you view my other items.

If you win this auction you can have FREE POSTAGE & PACKING on an UNLIMITED number of additional posters from my current listings. Please see information below to see how to qualify for this offer.

Every single and album released during the The Smiths' prolific four year recording lifespan was promoted by a poster that used the same image as the record. Each was designed by Morrissey himself and Rough Trade’s Jo Smee.

These posters have become highly collectable, not least because most were a generic size and all a similar style, featuring a duotone photograph of a star from film, television or popular culture. Morrissey’s artwork of the icons has itself become iconic.

Due to the desirability of artefacts relating to the most important British band of the 1980s there have been bootleg reproductions of these posters, often with different dimensions. However, the ones I’m listing are original (please see the ‘provenance’ section below). You can be assured by the fact that my current and past listings have all been original promotional posters from the ‘80s and ’90s, few of which (if any) have ever been reprinted or reproduced. Coincidentally I was collecting and accumulating promo posters by artists on independent labels from around the time of The Smiths’ debut single ‘Hand In Glove’. None of my Smiths posters have been bought from other collectors/dealers so none has appeared previously on eBay.

I shall be listing two or three posters from my highly prized Smiths collection every month for the next year or so, in random order. I don’t have all of them, but perhaps most.

CONDITION: Very Good/Good. Please note this is a strict 'indieposters' rating, not to be compared with other sellers' more generic ones.

This valuable Smiths poster was used in a shop display in London 29 years ago.

It has no creasing, sellotape, blue tack, fading or creasing, and all corners square and edges sharp.

Four crisp, sharp edges, four square corners, no tears, creases, or rippling, no sellotape, no blue tack, clean back, nice and flat with very little in the way of general wear. It has been stored in my possession, not displayed and away from light, since 1987.

Imperfections are as follows:

A 22cm surface cut from right side up to the 'N' in World Won't Listen'. It's clean, not too noticable and doesn't go through to the back of the poster. There's no consequential damage to the print.

Staple holes near all corners.

Slight denting near top right corner.

Please:

Examine the photograph using the zoom function to satisfy yourself that I have accurately described this vintage poster's condition.

PROVENANCE: All of my Smiths posters were sourced from the Rough Trade 'Chain With No Name' shop Ugly Child Records, Walthamstow, London between 1984 and 1987. They were each from a one-off print run for the record label and were never on sale to the public. The photograph is of the actual item. All the items I list will be on a similar coloured background so that you know they are my own photos.

PACKAGING: Your poster will be lightly rolled then wrapped in a sheet of brown paper with twists at both ends for easy and safe removal from the professionally made-for-purpose mailing tube.

POSTAGE: The postage & packing cost in this listing is a FLAT FEE using FULLY INSURED delivery. I shall send your poster by Royal Mail Special Delivery to the UK, which is tracked, needs to be signed for, is guaranteed to be delivered the day after dispatch, and covers compensation up to £500.

For delivery overseas I shall use Tracked and/or Signed For (it varies with destination) and adjust the insurance (at no further cost to you) for the total value of your order.

FREE POSTAGE ON ADDITIONAL ITEMS: This covers any number of posters of any size that you win/buy within a seven day period SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

1)AUCTION ITEMS ONLY -  PLEASE REQUEST AN INVOICE BEFORE MAKING ANY PAYMENT. If you've won an auction and intend to bid on others I'll hold the order until you tell me you've finished bidding. I'll then send you an invoice showing FREE POSTAGE & PACKING on second and subsequent items.

2)BUY IT NOW ITEMS - As eBay requires immediate payment for these (including p&p) you will need to contact me after buying the FIRST item so that I can send you a Paypal invoice with ZERO p&p for the other Buy It Now or auction item(s) you want.

GUARANTEE: I double check all orders before sending. However if you feel that the description of the poster and its condition doesn't match the listing and the photograph please contact me to arrange return and refund (including postage costs).

MORE ORIGINAL INDIE PROMO POSTERS! Over the coming weeks and months I'll be listing many more ranging from well known bands like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Pixies & Erasure to obscure acts. Expect plenty from the likes of 4AD, Rough Trade & Mute as well as items from smaller labels. There will also be a few postcards and possibly some other promotional items. I'm sorry that I won't be able to answer specific queries about other things that will be offered in the future (due to disorganized storage!) but please see my other items and add me as a favourite seller so that you'll see new finds as they are listed.

INDIEPOSTERS’ OWN CONDITION GUIDE:

Unless otherwise noted, all of the posters I list have never been displayed or mounted, other than for a few seconds to take the photograph.

They have been stored since new either flat or rolled, away from sunlight.

Like New - flawless, or some minor signs of handling at most. All corners and edges are sharp. May be factory folded if mentioned as such in the description.

Very Good - some slight bending and/or rippling, which is likely not to be visible if poster is flattened and framed behind glass or clear plastic.  Corners and edges are still sharp. No tears, or pin/staple holes, sellotape, blue tack, fading or creasing.

Good - may have creasing and/or more substantial bending and/or rippling, and/or very small tears and/or small pin/staple holes and/or fading. Corners and edges may not be sharp. Possibly other minor defects as noted, but still in nice overall condition for a vintage item.

Acceptable - other, more substantial defects as described.

Thanks for looking.
