Description
For auction is a rare (and possibly unique) double-sided 45 of surf instrumentals by The Spartans recorded at Morton Sound Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne sometime in the early 1960s. On one side is a cover of Perfidia (the track made famous by The Ventures); on the other side is a track called Spartica. This particular track was composed by someone with the surname Minchella. I am guessing that this person was a member of the band and that this is an original composition. I have tried to find out information about The Spartans as I live near Newcastle where this was recorded and pressed but I have not had any luck.
The 7” 45rpm disc is pressed on quite thick, heavy vinyl (it's like an acetate) and is in generally very good condition with only some light scuffs and light surface scratches. It plays well.
I have a sound file of the Spartica track which I will email to you if you want to hear it; just ask. I don't seem to be able to upload it to ebay. If anyone can tell me how to do it I'd be grateful! I've also tried to upload it to YouTube without luck. It's a good little track and well worth hearing.

On 26-May-10 at 07:45:04 BST, seller added the following information:I've had a closer look at this at the suggestion of a chap called Andrew who contacted me via ebay and the centre hole is shiny silver suggesting that it's made from aluminium and is likely to be an acetate. There are no stamps in the run-out groove on either side. Andrew, after I sent him a sound file, described it as "a slightly inept but pleasing early surf-style instrumental probably from '63" and I couldn't agree more. The Ventures it ain't but it definitely has charm. Bid away or not as the mood takes you...
