Trees – The Garden Of Jane Delawney was issued in the UK in April 1970 on CBS S63837. This is a first pressing with the front laminated sleeve. Matrix numbers A1 / B1. Really rare!

Trees was an English folk rock band that existed between 1969 and 1972. Although the group met with little commercial success in their time, the reputation of the band has grown over the years. Like other folk contemporaries, Trees' music was influenced by Fairport Convention, but with a heavier and more psychedelic edge. The group's material was divided between adaptations of traditional songs and original compositions.

Trees produced two studio albums, both in 1970, The Garden of Jane Delawney and On The Shore – a mintish first pressing of which I have also listed on eBay now.

The original band disbanded after recording the two albums.

Recorded November / December 1969 at Sound Techniques, London

The single front laminated sleeve is in Very Good (+) condition overall. On the front there is some creasing in the laminate and a hint of ringwear at the top. The unlaminated rear has some fading in the colour and also early signs of ringwear running down the left-hand side from the top to the bottom. There is a name in ink in the top right (see photo). The spine has creases but no wear and the spine text is still clearly legible. There is minimal edge and cornerwear apart from a split in the laminate on the top edge extending about 3 cms from the spine.

The record is housed in its ORIGINAL CBS inner sleeve which is in Excellent condition with no seam splits or tears. also in fantastic condition apart from a 5cm split in one of the side seams.

The vinyl is in Very Good condition. Visually there are some hairlines and a noticeable scuff at Side 1 Track 4. There is constant medium-level crackle which is most noticeable on the quieter tracks such as the title track. The crackle is obscured when the bass and drums kick in. Despite the crackle the music plays without distortion and there are no sticks or jumps.  Both labels are clean and unmarked apart from a little spindlewear most evident on Side 1.

Unlike my copy of “On The Shore”, which I have also listed, this LP is pretty far from mint, but remains a serviceable copy of an extremely rare record which will suffice until an affordable better copy comes along.

All my records are cleaned on a Moth Mk II RCM and play-graded in their entirety on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with RB300 tonearm and Denon DL-304 MC cartridge tracking at 1.5 g through an azur 840a amp via Chord Odyssey 4 bi-wired cable into KEF Q900 speakers. Inferior component-type turntables without proper tracking are more prone to sticking and jumping than high-grade turntables. If you love vinyl, do yourself a favour and invest in a decent system if you don't already own one. You don't have to pay thousands. Excellent quality 2nd hand turntables are available on eBay for around £100 (about the price of 1 rare LP). Your investment will be more than rewarded by the additional listening pleasure you derive.

Grading :

M = Mint - as new

NM = Near Mint - very few, light signs of usage that don’t affect play - the cover has only minor signs of wear.

EX = Excellent - some signs of usage, but very little lessening in sound quality – the cover might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VG = Very Good - no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch - normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

G = Good - the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches - the cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

+ and - are used as appropriate.

Shipping Policy :

If not still sealed, records are taken out of the sleeve to avoid splitting. They are posted in professional mailers with proper stiffeners for extra protection. These are pre-used and so are provided free of charge. A polythene sleeve is also always included.
