Description
There are three items in this lot - two Columbia demonstration records and a related sleeve, but the sleeve doesn't match either of the records, so please listen carefully. All three items showed up for the first picture, then they're shown individually, two pictures each, in the following order:
This unnumbered Columbia Graphophone Company 10-inch 78 RPM record is labeled "Special Demonstration Double-Disc" and is specifically "not for sale" but intended as a free handout from record dealers. The first side is mostly spoken word advertising, with some musical soundbites thrown in as examples of recording quality and clarity. The second side is "Kentucky Babe" by the Columbia Male Quartette. The most recent date in the patent information is 1909.
This unnumbered Columbia Graphophone Company 10-inch 78 RPM record is labeled "Special Columbia Advertising Record." The first side is "Good Night, Little Girl, Good Night" by Henry Burr. And the second side contains an advertising spiel promoting Columbia's double-sided discs, illustrated by an orchestral piece. The most recent date in the patent information is 1909, and the side two label is customized with the stamp of Hustedt Piano Company, of Detroit.
Both records are still nice and shiny, but with a few surface scuffs and scratches, especially on the latter. They both play through without jumping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, and the background noise is mostly light for records of this age, but with a few scattered pops and clicks, especially on the latter. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well it will play on your equipment.
The sleeve in the pictures was found with one of the records, but on close examination it is for a different "Special Demonstration Columbia New Process Record" made by the Columbia Phonograph Company. The record described on the sleeve would have had a Ted Lewis Band fox trot on one side and three versions of Schubert's "Serenade" on the other.
