Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins

Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins was released by John and Yoko in 1968. The result of an all-night session of musical experimentation in John’s studio at his Kenwood mansion, John and Yoko's debut album is known less for its avant garde content than for its cover. The album's title came from the couple's feeling that they were "two innocents, lost in a world gone mad", and, because after making the recording, the two consummated their relationship.
The recording consists largely of tape loops playing while John tries out various instruments and sound effects, changes tapes and plays other recordings, and converses with Yoko, who ad-libs in response to the sounds. John's longtime friend Pete Shotton wrote in his memoir, The Beatles, Lennon, and Me, that many of the loops were made by John and Pete in the days just before Two Virgins was recorded.
Two Virgins was the third album released by Apple Records. EMI in the UK and Capitol in the U.S. refused to handle it, because of the cover art: a photo of John and Yoko, naked, facing the camera for the front cover, and a rear view of them for the back cover. The photos were taken by John, at Ringo’s London flat in October, 1968, using a camera with a self-timer. Track Records, and Tetragrammaton in the U.S., agreed to distribute the record as long at it was wrapped in a brown paper cover, and the photos were not visible.
