Description
Victor record album set No. P-146 is "Up Swing", which originally contained one record each by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. It still contains four 10-inch 78 RPM records, one by each of the above, but only three of them are not original to the album, so please pay attention as I list the titles.
First, the one that is NOT original to the album is:
Victor # 25521 -- "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "Vibraphone Blues" by the Benny Goodman Quartet.
The other three are:
Victor # 20-1550 (Sides 3 & 4 of the set) -- "Song of India" and "Yes Indeed" by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra.
Victor # 20-1551 (Sides 5 & 6 of the set) -- "Begin the Beguine" and "Oh Lady Be Good" by Artie Shaw and his Orchestra.
Victor # 20-1552 (Sides 7 & 8 of the set) -- "Tuxedo Junction" and "A String of Pearls" by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra.
Six of the eight sides are considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's iconic Hot Jazz Discography, which gives recording dates in the 1936-1941 range. The two Glenn Miller sides are not included.
In terms of condition, the records all look to be in about VG+ condition or close, still nice and shiny, but with some visible surface scuffs and scratches and digs or blisters. I've played them all on my Audio-Technica turntable, and there were no jumps or repeats, and mostly just typical light levels of ambient background noise, but with some scattered clicks, pops and ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering devices and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
The album itself is in solid and functional condition, with the spine and the pocket seams intact, but some water damage to the cover, causing some staining, wrinkling and paper loss.
