Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. This first issue is one of the best I have seen for years and one of the earliest made too.

Cat Number: ILPS 9193.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. Somewhat above average, later pressings became much thinner.

Rarity: Moderate: but the first ILPS (Island prefix originals) are far harder, especially so hardly played and with a superb cover. 1 G matrix pressings are almost the Holy Grail for discerning collectors.

Brief Info: Fourth album and their first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums were still popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the gorgeous cover attracted attention or not, this was their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely cover in superb condition and a beautifully produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific example and one of the earliest made with side one including that prized 1 G mother and stamper. Most collectors and fans will enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) up there with the best I have ever seen. An unlaminated gatefold with matt smooth surfaces, includes the lyric inner and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor Ltd and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover: Front & Back: WOWIE ZOWIE – what a beauty!! A wear-prone cover in supreme condition, little to fault on this one and only rarely do they look this nice. Clean, fresh with barely a mark or any traces of rubbing and no creasing. Highly attractive with supreme artwork that shows minimal traces of handling with rich colour and vibrancy. No ring wear or edge rubs either, even the corners retain their ink. This is truly connoisseur standard.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Stunning and practically as made.

Top Edges: Incredible: both look new. Magnificently straight and no wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same again, even more remarkable for traditional storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both again like new: the front is tucked and folded with a real folded edge which is unrubbed and crisp. This gives a more de luxe finish of course. The back opening is clean, very sharp with barely even a hint of any thickening or burr traces, this is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Absolutely SUPERB!: a near perfect spine that also looks amazing. Solid, dead straight, uncompressed and folded square, so all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this makes a big difference to visual neatness and pleasure. All text is perfect and unworn and again no rubbing to the surface or fold hinges. Guaranteed NO tip-ins or enhancements, this is top drawer.

Corners: Barely even a tip rub to be seen – covers hardly even came this good from new – that may sound daft, but it’s true after being factory packed and distributed in boxes to shops. This supreme cover looks almost custom-made. No tip creasing or dinks and all retain practically mint pointed shape and definition.

Cover Summary: An almost definitive museum-quality Roger Dean cover and up there with the very best covers I have ever seen bar none. I have seen enough of these over time to realise just how exceptional this really is and few have even come close. An immaculate all-round example of this highly wear-prone early 70’s cover, and an original too. One that will prove nigh-on impossible to find much better. This is one for the specialist and highly discerning collector, you could search for years to find one to match or better it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or close to. Arguably harder still to find in top conditions being very prone to ringwear and friction rubs due to being dark with a early copy records being thick and heavy. Double sided, unlined and including lyrics. This one retains deep colour with a fine rim rub near the bottom edge. Unsplit and hardly creased, some mild traces of handling with is so very difficult to avoid, any marks are quite light but a few are present. This has the original ILPS 9193 number and wide recessed top opening which is crisp and undamaged. The odd small edge rub is near impossible to avoid but so rarely seen unsplit.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with just a few ultra fine and faint surface trace marks visible under angled light. This record was stored inside it’s original inner and being unlined, avoiding a few minor surface traces is again difficult. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed with a way above average weight – these more typical of the very first issues. A copy with minimal plays on the evidence of looks and sound, and both impressive labels emphasise this still further. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors. Few 1 G examples will even get close (if you can indeed even find another).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent progressive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a lovely clear production. No pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing with the ultimate detail only the earliest copies truly offer. Any surface sounds barely even registered. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played little and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when grading this wonderful record and was a real pleasure to hear again after some time. This record and cover will prove very difficult to find better and merit my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
