Label/Format: Bronze – ‘Evolution of Man’ format with the original Island records credits (Please see my label scan for the details).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with light+ to moderate spindle marks. A few more than I normally like but this has no relevance for the superb playing of this lovely record. Some owners simply used the label as a guide to the spindle and I am very sure this record has been played little.

Cat Number: ILPS 9193.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 126 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Fourth album and their first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums were still popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the gorgeous cover attractive attention or not, this was their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely cover in superb condition and a well produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific example and early, with the Island credits and number, most collectors and fans will enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) up there with the best I have seen, certainly for some time. An unlaminated gatefold that includes the lyric inner and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Robor Ltd and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover Front: A delicate front in supreme condition, little to fault on this one and only rarely do they look this nice. Clean with barely a mark or any traces of rubbing and no creasing. Highly attractive, fresh and clean, a truly beautiful example.

Cover Back: Equally as magnificent as the front, one tiny nick on the opening edge the only near microscopic blemish. The lack of rubbing, fading and especially ringwear is always a bonus on this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made.

Top Edges: Superb, straight and barely any wear, any traces ultra fine and faint.

Bottom Edges: As above but even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with any blemishes tiny, no feathering, no trimming. Record entered on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Absolutely superb: a near perfect spine that looks fantastic. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together. All text is perfect and unworn and again no rubbing.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs only, neat and retaining lovely sharp shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this highly wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This highly attractive Roger Dean cover should please most-all collectors.

The Inner: EX++ and in real terms even harder to find in top conditions being very prone to ringwear and friction rubs. Double sided, unlined and including lyrics. This one has supreme deep colour and no ringwear or creasing, the only blemishes is a small rub and thin on the bottom edge centre and the original owner put the duration of each side of the record INSIDE this unlined inner. The top recessed opening is immaculate and I am very sure the record has received few plays, the spindle marks deceive on this one. Original and including the ILPS 9193 number.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, with just a very few ultra fine and faint surface trace marks visible under light. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, jet black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on the evidence of looks and sound. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent progressive record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a lovely clear production. No pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing, any surface sounds barely even registered. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing really spoilt my pleasure when grading this wonderful record and was nice to hear again after some time. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
