'Look At Yourself'

Bronze, UK, 1971

ILPS 9169

THEIR PREVIOUS album 'Salisbury' had been a brave attempt to traverse several musical bases without achieving the kind of critcal praise or commercial success that such moves deserve. Depite feeling somewhat thrawted, the bands desire to move forward was still very much at the fore front of their plan and with this in mind they quickly got down to work on its follow up, the magnificient 'Look At Yourself'. On release it was heralded as a huge critical advancement, gaining enough accolades to suggest that it was something of a bench mark release as the entire mood was infinitely more memorable, accesible and very dynamic. The title track for instance is still acknowldged as an all time Heep classic, a heavy hard rock song with lots of Hensley's Hammond and triumphant trademark operatic vocal from Byron. 'July Morning' too has the feel of a watershed moment, pushing at the experimental and grandiose boundaries set by Deep Purple's 'Child In Time', helping this particular track to achieve near legendary status when performed in concert.

It could be argued that 'Look At Yourself' is the very first of the truly great Heep albums and one that has stood the test of time best, garnering praise and testimony from all quarters. Incidently, the bands new drummer Ian Clarke (recruited from Vertigo prog legends Cressida) almost immediately following the 'Salisbury' sessions just in time for their debut North American tour.

A superb copy.

Pressing: Bronze, UK, 1971

Vinyl: Super clean condition. One or two very faint spindle marks but no other signs of any use. Grades as a very nice MINT-!

Cover: Extremely Light signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated die cut cover with mirror insert! The die cut exposes a silver foil 'mirror' insert so that you can 'look at yourself'! As most Heep fans will agree, it is almost impossible to find these covers in anywhere near strong condition; the silver ink is prone to rubbing and the foil insert displays even the most minor scratch and marks. Most copies normally look awful and the better examples are never perfect. Well, this one is really nice - displaying only light wear. There are practically no faults. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and some feather light creases. Spine is perfectly square, straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. The 'mirror' is about as good as it gets and there are no rips or tears in the die cut elements. Impossible for this album. Grades as a super strong Ex
