UNITED STATES ARMY 1968 POP MUSIC RADIO RECORDS
7 Vintage LPs with Cuesheets & Press Release
Terrific set of 7 vinyl LP records produced by the U.S. Army for its syndicated radio show "The Hit Heard Round The World".
The records represent programs from four different weeks in 1968, and three of the cue sheets are included. Below, I've made a transcript of the one without a cue sheet.
Also included is a "Suggested Local Newspaper Publicity Release" on stationery matching the cue sheets. These press releases are not usually included when these records come up for sale these days. It's filled out in ink for "Station WMVR on the Leeside Show each morning." WMVR is a Sidney, Ohio radio station.
Show host Fred Robbins would interview top radio DJs from countries around the world about what pop music was hot in their country and each DJ would play some tracks. The 10-minute versions include three different songs for each of the 5 countries, and the 5-minute versions include one song from each country.
There's many well-known songs by major groups such as the Rolling Stones and The Doors, but the real interest here is the songs from outside the United States, such as the obscure Canadian soul classic, "A Day in the Life of Steven Truscott" by The Bedtime Story, and "Hope" by the Dave Miller Set.
Perhaps the most interesting feature is the many Army recruitment songs played during the show. They were using the "With Army The Future's Up To You" jingle at the time and these records contain many different versions, done in different styles of the contemporary music. So you wind up with hip songs with lyrics such as, "You can track a missile. Or learn how to make a movie."
Some are sung by identified pop stars of the day, such as Barry Winslow of the Royal Guardsman. Some are by unidentified singers, such as a pretty Army Nursing song perfomed by a singer who sounds something like Judy Collins.
Many of the recruitment songs and pitches are aimed at nurses, because they couldn't draft women and were always short of them.
The DJs are a hoot to listen to, particularly British DJs Jimmy Savile and Kenny Everett (who sounds stoned) and European DJs Rudi Senia and Renzo Arbor, whose heavily accented English is barely understandable.
Condition: Excellent. Vinyl is excellent throughout. Sleeves are clean and attractive with no splits. Inner sleeves are included for all and they are all original.
