Artist: SLIM SHORT
Titles: A-side: “A- O.K.” / B-side: untitled slow instrumental ballad
Label: plain light pink labels, with song title and artist name handwritten, suggesting that this was made as a demo. No catalog number or writer’s credit. Labels display moderate shelf wear and writing on both sides. Song title "A- O.K." and "Slim Short" is written on both sides. The name "Helen" and initials "H.H." are written on the instrumental side. Interestingly, the side with the more lightly written info in ballpoint pen and pencil is the rocker side.
NOTE: "PHILLIPS" is etched in the runout groove on one side. Also, the rocker side has "SM-1" and the instrumental ballad side has "SM-2" etched in the runout groove.
Year: estimated to be early 60s. The only recording by Slim Short that I am aware of was in 1964, but this one seems like it might have been earlier based on the sound and style. Listening to the song, there is a reference to "Shep" which upon reflection I believe is likely a reference to the famous astronaut Alan M. Shepard who made the first manned U.S. space flight in 1961. So my best guess is that this recording was made around the time of that event.
Condition: The rockabilly side, "A- O.K." is play-graded at solid VG+ with a fair amount of the original gloss remaining. There is overall surface scuffing and a few light hairlines, but no deep marks or gouges. There is a very light background hiss that is inherent in the pressing, but no clicks, skips, or other distractions. The side plays very enjoyably, with a sound that is unmistakably that of SUN Studios, with their unique acoustics, the pumping piano backing, and "Phillips" etched in the runout groove on one side.
The B-side, a slow instrumental ballad featuring dreamy guitars, is not playable because it keeps sticking in several places, so I gave up on it and will grade it as "poor".
Note: The blue tint in photo #3 is a reflection of the sky color through the window where the photo was taken, in order to reveal the etching in the photo. Its true color is black.
