This ORIGINAL Upsetter Records single from 1975 features a Lee Perry vocal augmented by The Ethiopians over his infectious "Three Blind Mice" rhythm with the dub instrumental flipside "Dread Locks Version" stretchin' out the mighty mix. In this vital musical 'skit' Scratch passes judgement on a baldhead posing as a dread at a tryout. Lee gives his treatise on nattiness and it's nice. Knot up now.As David Katz writes in his amazing book PEOPLE FUNNY BOY -The Genius Of Lee "Scratch" Perry, "Leo Graham's 'Three Blind Mice' had seen a number of other permutations before...Perry also placed himself on the the rhythm for the insulting 'I Am A Dreadlocks', in which the Upsetter questions an auditioning baldhead who claims to be a dread. Leonard Dillon noted that the song was commenting on tension between those who wore locks and devout Rastas who did not. 'In those days the majority of Rastas were not dread, and the Ethiopian centre that we originate from, the Rastas were not dread, they are combsome. So we say "How come you no have a beard and say you're dread," and me a repeat "I am a dreadlocks," so it heartically dread, and you just hear in it one heart.'
Perry's religious faith came from within, and he saw no need to wear locks to demonstrate his conviction. As Leonard Dillon put it 'He did not dread either at that time.
