Uriah Heep Bundle 3 of 3 - The Post Byron Years - Maybe I should have called it something else but for all the great vocalists Heep have had they are all defined by the man who sung the songs originally. The John Lawton era was quite a change of direction with a trio of albums predominantly written by Ken Hensley who continued to excel as a song writer. The Hanging tree which introduces us to John Lawton is a great song brilliantly sung and we are up and running. The title track Firefly is a bit special too. Innocent Victim and Fallen Angel also excellent albums. No bad songs on either. I first saw Heep in this era and loved them live. Lawton's voice is outstanding. This was emphasised when I saw the first Magiians Biorthday gig and he and Ken came back. Just as strong as ever. Then we come to Conquest (note Conquest and Abominog became stuck together where there had been a sticky label and there is a small tear on each cover where they have been separated) I love John Sloman in both Lone Star (the 2nd best support act I ever saw after Max Webster) and his solo stuff since. They say he was not for Heep but I think he did a great job on the album and again I like every song on it. Some don't. I missed the tour unfortunately so don't know how that went. Then we have the Pete Goalby era. Abominog, Head First and Equator which I would rank in that order are my least favourite Heep albums but there is still much to like about them. Abominog almost harks back to classic Heep and Head First and Equator are more radio friendly.
