THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT GATEFOLD COVER WITH ARTWORK BY PAUL WHITEHEAD - "CHECKMATE" AND "BIRTHDAY" - THERE ARE NO PRINTERS CREDITS ON THE COVER BUT IT HAS ALL THE HALLMARKS OF AN EJ DAY SLEEVE AND SIMILAR TO MANY OTHER ORIGINAL SLEEVES I HAVE SEEN THIS ONE HAS BEEN MIS-CROPPED ON THE FRONT EDGE (please see photos)

The foreboding crawl of the Hammond organ is what made Van Der Graaf Generator one of the darkest and most engrossing of all the early progressive bands.
On H to He Who Am the Only One, the brooding tones of synthesizer and oscillator along with Peter Hammil's distinct and overly ominous voice make it one of this British band's best efforts. Kicking off with the prog classic "Killer," an eight minute synthesized feast of menacing tones and threatening lyrics, the album slowly becomes shadowed with Van Der Graaf's sinister instrumental moodiness.
With superb percussion work via Guy Evans, who utilises the tympani drum to its full extent, tracks like "The Emperor in His War-Room" and "Lost" are embraced with a blackened texture that never fades and the effective use of saxophones from David Jackson gives the sombreness some life without taking away any of the instrumental petulance.
H to He is carpeted with a science fiction theme, bolstered by the bleak but extremely compelling use of heavy tones and the absence of rhythms and flighty pulsations. This album, which represents Van Der Graaf in their most illustrious stage, is a pristine example of how dark progressive rock should sound

LABELS: Clean, bright and unmarked with moderate spindle traces - this copy has enjoyed over the years but it has also been extremely well cared for
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces still retains their original deep, glossy sheen with just some 'misting' on the edge of Side One from storage, but no other prominent markings, and this 'misting' has no audio consequence whatsoever- the audio delivery is sensational throughout
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality - incredibly impressive with a very warm, very deep and very heavy sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP, in fact every time I return to it I think that this must surely be the greatest prog LP ever released) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks or pops and just some general light background surface noise on the quieter sections on "Lost" - nothing major or intrusive at all (and none elsewhere at all ) otherwise, this pressing is exceptionally clean and the sound quality is simply sensational with the gorgeous 'House With No Door' playing just about as quietly and beautifully as you could wish for. The whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, has amazing audio clarity and separation, no groove-wear and no distortion and is critically graded a very, very strong EXCELLENT+ (Side One) and EXCELLENT to (+) (Side Two) for audio (at least, - this is a very, very critical grading) - a really fantastic copy - tremendous stuff and very, very highly recommended
SLEEVE: This cover is incredibly prone to wear, having an untreated matt finish but this one is in EXCELLENT condition. It's good, square and solid with only a little wear to the edges and spine - where all text clear and bold and the outer and inner surfaces are clean with only a little rubbing and record impression. Overall, a very fine example of this first press cover
