La incomparable voz de La Freddy - La Voz del Sentimiento
Descomunalmente gorda. Para colmo, se llamaba Fredesvinda García Valdés. Trabajaba en la cocina de la mansión del doctor Arturo Bengochea, el presidente de la Liga Cubana de Béisbol Profesional.

Cada noche, con un vestido barato y sus enormes sandalias sin tacón, sentada en el Bar Celeste, tomaba ron y escuchaba la victrola. Luego de varios tragos, empezaba a contonearse con la música y a cantar a media voz. En su otro mundo, Freddy se sentía a gusto.

Una noche, apagaron la victrola y le pidieron que cantara. No tuvieron que insistirle. Freddy se sabía todos los boleros. Con su voz de contralto, venida directamente de Dios, los cantaba como nadie. Era como si hubiera vivido todos aquellos amores desdichados. Como si le fuera la vida en ponerle melodía a los pesares del alma.

El bar era frecuentado por artistas y músicos que recalaban en él cuando terminaban de trabajar en los cabarets cercanos. Freddy no permitía que la acompañaran. No necesitaba piano ni guitarra. Le bastaba con su garganta.

Cantaba a capella. Con una insoportable dulzura triste que casi te reventaba el corazón. El que la oyera cantar un bolero, ya no podía olvidar esa voz. Tenía algo que nadie podía explicar con palabras.

Las madrugadas del Bar Celeste ya no lo fueron más sin el rito de que, a la medianoche, la victrola callara para, bajo el spotligh, darle vía libre a Freddy.

Alguna de esas madrugadas de extraña magia, Guillermo Cabrera Infante vio y oyó a Freddy. Años después la convirtió en uno de los personajes de Tres Tristes Tigres: la cantante Estrella Rodríguez. La estrella del monólogo en 8 partes de Códac, "Ella cantaba boleros".

Sólo Cabrera Infante podía lograr un retrato como éste:

"con un vaso en la mano, moviéndose al compás de la música, moviendo las caderas, todo su cuerpo, de una manera bella, no obscena pero sí sexual y bellamente, meneándose a ritmo, canturreando por entre los labios aporreados, sus labios gordos y morados, a ritmo, agitando el vaso a ritmo, rítmicamente, bellamente el efecto total era de una belleza tan distinta, tan horrible, tan nueva"

Una noche, llegó al bar Aida Diestro con alguna de las muchachas de su cuarteto. Se acercó a Freddy y le dijo que le encantaba su voz. Estaba dispuesta a montarle un buen repertorio y a proponerla para el show del Capri.

Con Aida, Freddy fue a la audición del Capri y firmó el contrato. Dejó para siempre la cocina del doctor Bengochea para cantar profesionalmente.

En Diciembre del 1959, Freddy hice su debut televisivo en el programa Jueves de Partagás.

Fue un cuento de hadas rollizas y melancólicas. Ambientado en una Habana que ya había sido condenada por los que se decían sus redentores, no podía tener un final feliz.

El Bar Celeste ya no existe. Freddy tampoco. Su corazón no resistió tanta pena. Su voz quedó en un disco de larga duración grabado en 1960. El único que grabó. Una rareza para coleccionistas. La placa de acetato número 552 de la firma Puchito: Noche y día, Freddy con la orquesta de Humberto Suárez.

En el disco viene La Estrella, la canción que Ela O'Farrill compuso especialmente para Freddy:

"No era nada ni nadie, ahora dicen que soy una estrella,

Que me convertí en una de ellas para brillar en la eterna noche".

RECORDS (VINYL) GRADES :

SS (STILL SEALED) Sealed at factory and never opened. Disc is assumed to be undamaged and mint, but this cannot be proven until the album is actually opened and the disc examined.

M (MINT) Perfection, no flaws, defects, marks or otherwise indications of being handled or played. Any scuffs, hairline scratches or other marks disqualify discs from this category. I do not use this grade, as even the act of inserting the disc or removing it from the paper sleeve may cause scuff marks on the vinyl.
NM or M-(NEAR MINT or MINT MINUS) This is highest grade that I will assign to opened, handled records. The vinyl is virtually flawless, bright and shiny. A very minor, barely visible scuff or two may be permitted, but no scratched The disc should play with no audible noise. The label is bright, clean and unmarked.

EX or VG++ (EXCELLENT or VERY GOOD ++) Disc plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a hairline scratch or two but nothing that is obvious or affects play. Vinyl is bright and shiny; label is clean and unmarked.
VG+ (VERY GOOD PLUS) Some visible surface wear, very minor scratches and scuffs, but minimal impact on the sound quality. Vinyl will still have good luster; labels may have minor imperfections:(Slightly warped ,small labels or initials, etc.) but otherwise clean.
VG (VERY GOOD) Vinyl will have noticeable scratches or scuffs that cause minor surface noise, but power the music. There

will be no skips. Vinyl may appear somewhat dull and grayish. Labels may have small tears, tape marks, larger writing, etc. but still easily legible. slightly warped,There may be wear or deformation of the spindle hole.
G (GOOD) Well-played, dull, grayish vinyl with deeper scratches and wear causing distracting surface noise (hisses, pops, cracks and other nasties ). The record will still play through without any skips. Labels may be significantly defaced or damaged.
F (FAIR) P (POOR) Unless the record is particularly rare, I would not try to sell a record in this condition. There will be major noise, surface damage, deep scratches, and skips. Attempting to listen to these discs will be painful. These discs are basically trash unless a collector desires one to fill a space in a collection until a better one comes along. W writing on label ,sticker or any remaining adhesive to the label.

ALBUM COVER GRADES
SS (STILL SEALED) Album is still in the factory-applied shrink-wrapping.
M (MINT) Absolutely perfect; no corner dings, marks, tears, dents, impressions from the disc, or other flaws. Cover should appear as if a record has never been inside.
NM or M-(NEAR MINT or MINT MINUS) Very minor signs of wear or cover impressions. Artwork is as close to perfection as possible.
EX or VG++ (EXCELLENT or VERY GOOD ++) Minor disc impression or slight corner creases, no wrinkles, puckers, seam splits or writing on the cover. Artwork is clean and unworn and there is no ink wear.
VG+ (VERY GOOD PLUS) Cover is but may have minor writing or marks and may show slight wear . There may be just the of ring wear, where the area disc has created a raised on the cover that resulted in the ink wearing off the paper. There may be slight discoloration or staining, minor seam wear, but no splits or tears. Corners may have small creases or fraying.
VG (VERY GOOD) Covers are worn and used. Seams may be starting to split or may have been unobtrusively repaired with clear tape. PAPER COVER WITH BREAK DOWN AND FLAKED EDGES.(I use special archival-quality, non-yellowing, clear tape for all repairs.) There is moderate ring wear, but the artwork is still attractive. There may be yellowing or discoloration and there may be larger writing, labels, or marks. Corners may have damage or creases and there may be scratches or gouges that otherwise damage the artwork.
G (GOOD) Several (but not all of the following flaws will apply : Seam splits, marker writing, major seam splits, significant ring wear, damaged corners, tears, cuts, gouges, masking or duct tape seam repairs, or other flaws and damage. Again, probably only useful to fill a collection until something better can be found.
F (FAIR) P (POOR) Trash, useable only to keep the record off the floor. Writing on label ,sticker or any remaining adhesive to the label.

78 RPM: KEY TO GRADING ABBREVIATIONS (I aim to be conservative) (Grading is done visually):

N = Mint; E = Excellent; V = Very Good; G = Good; F = Fair;: means a little less; + means a little more; rmflk = rim flake; nap = not affecting play; cresc crk = crescent shaped crack; ULC = under-label crack; labscr = scratches on label, wol = writing on label, sol = sticker on label.

RECORD COLLECTORS NOTE: All vinyl is packed professionally by record collector in a sturdy cardboard mailer with the vinyl removed from the jacket to prevent shipping damaged. Any question let me know please.
