Vos Cantu Monemus emerged from the folk underground of suburban sixties Maryland to issue one of the greatest micro press releases of a genre that translated the feelings of this turbulent time better than any other. Imbuing timeworn sounds with youthful hope; ethereal, haunting and inspiring all at once, "Words Never Said" is a journey through the looking glass to a time long gone. Soaring vocals, expert musicianship and to the point song arrangements make this an LP that goes down smooth then sinks in deep.
"There are a number of privately released albums from the tail end of the '60s folk-boom that raise significant interest among genre specialists. Much like Tryad, Vos Cantu Monemus sound like Peter, Paul & Mary with all the upbeat sing-alongs removed, leaving only moody, minor chord ballads with somber female (and sometimes male) vocals over acoustic guitar-picking. This is a fairly effective concept, and Words Never Said is a pleasant and occasionally arresting record, even if you're not a hardcore fan of thoughtful eastcoast folk. The third track "Barbarous" in particular crosses over into ethereal domains. There is an obvious Simon & Garfunkel influence which has the band reaching for crystalline "Scarborough Fair" sublimity, supported by a well-engineered recording. It's all a bit square and dated, as usual, but for late-night brooding with mulled wine in front of the fire, a good pick, if you can ever find a copy. Housed in a charmingly crude DIY sleeve, this was pressed up by the same custom house that did the Soft Rock album. The small press run has been reported by the band, who apparently cut a second, unreleased album." - Patrick Lundborg/Acid Archives
