This beautiful LP – a truly fine collector’s copy – from Decca (LXT 5112, English pressing, heavy flat vinyl, orange/silver label – ED1, laminated flipback jacket) features the illustrious Vienna Octet in a magnificent account of Mozart’s Divertimento No. 15 in B-flat Major K. 287.

Here, the Vienna Octet were comprised of the following players:

Willi Boskovsky, violin

Philipp Matheis, violin

Günther Breitenbach, viola

Johann Krump, double-bass

Josef Veleba, horn

Josef Lackner, horn

There is a freshness and openhearted lyricism, indeed a Viennese lilt, to the playing here that few have matched and none surpassed – the sound is wonderfully open, warm, and bright. 

This lovely performance was recorded in the warm acoustics of the Brahmssaal, the Musikverein, Vienna, during 4-7 April 1955 (producer: Victor Olof and Peter Andry / engineer: Cyril Windebank). There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The striking cover design is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is very slight curling at the open edge, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, lovely collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
