After his success in the world of skateboarding, Guerrero decided to pursue his musical interests and was a member of the skate rock band Free Beer and the instrumental post-rock group Jet Black Crayon. Guerrero's music touches on multiple genres, including rock, hip hop, funk, soul, and jazz.
Tommy Guerrero has been turning out ever better records since the late 90's. A guitarist from San Francisco, Mr Guerrero is big on the Bay Area punk and skateboard scenes - that's not me, but I like his music all the same - and "Lifeboats and Follies" is his best album to date. Mr Guerrero's angular, single note guitar style is pared down and minimalist - Eric Clapton he ain't - but there's a simple elegance to it. You don't need to be the reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix to be a "good" guitarist, and Mr Guerrero is a good guitarist. The songs on "Lifeboats" are all Mr Guerrero's own - with titles like "Yerba Buena Bump," "The Last Maverick," and "Nomadic Static," they can best be described as groove music with a heavy Latin influence - sort of Magic Slim on acid meets the Wailers in Vera Cruz. Make no mistake about it, if Mr Guerrero's music doesn't get you movin', you must be paralyzed. In addition to the guitar work, Mr Guerrero contributes the electric and upright bass, various keyboards, the melodica, some percussion and a little vocalesse. He's joined by too many other musicians to mention - except that trumpeter Marc Capelle really shines - his cutting sound, weaving around Mr Guerrero's guitar, moves the music to "the next level." The sonics are excellent: plenty of instrumental separation and air.
