Label/Format: Vertigo – Full spiral label on side one and original large spiral logo on side two, these have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side two, the white side, still very white and devoid of the grubbiness that so many acquire over time. These labels on this title will rarely be seen better.

Cat Number: 6360 015.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: PLEASE READ: Very scarce: never an easy one to find on this most collectable label, and like many of the lesser known bands they are fast disappearing. Noteworthy things about this copy: it includes one of the best looking vertigo covers I have yet seen, one fine press mark on the front off a full Mint(–) grading, it shows little at all and the entire sleeve looks little short of stunning. The record appears very little played, BUT has a fine abrasion on side one, this has moderate sound at the very beginning on the quite intro but is less noticeable when the music gets louder thereafter. But still gently audible at times into the second song, then lesser so into the third and none on the fourth – side two plays superbly with barely anything unwanted. The ‘abrasion’ is very fine and faint as seen under angled light, the best way I can describe it is – a bit like a piece of super-fine-grit sandpaper being pulled once across the record going against the groove. So a clutch of ultra fine hairlines about an inch wide - being honest, I am a little surprise this mark even sounds, but it does. By a fair distance, the most audible at the very beginning of the quiet intro to the first song, it is lighter and more sporadic as the side progresses. Still a fine record, but with an issue to deter the more sensitive or discerning audiophile listener. So NOT for the perfectionist, but even with this flaw, that I strongly suspect is a manufacture issue, it is still quite an impressive first issue record. The cover is fantastic and could indeed be a massive upgrade for many existing owners of this rare album.

The Band: Ged Peck - guitar; Mac Poole - drums; Ashley Holt - lead vocal; Nick Simper - bass guitar; Frank Wilson - organ, piano.

Brief Info: Formed by Nick Simper, formerly bass-player with Deep Purple, this scarce and elusive Spiral album is a much sort-after album by rock fans as well as Vertigo collectors. This classic progressive label was fond of heavy bands and this one does not disappoint, but sales, like so many others on Vertigo, were modest or even poor. The lack of promotion would not have helped – all the potential was there for stardom but Warhorse only made the two albums and folded. Including another great and atmospheric cover design, this wear-prone sleeve – unlaminated like most all in the series – is a beauty with just the faint press mark on the front that I doubt if my camera has even registered. A little more visible under angled light, but normal full-on viewing, it shows very little with NO ink whatsoever lost. The record itself would have been superb bar the aforementioned ‘graze’ as described in detail in the ‘RARITY’ paragraph above (PLEASE read this). Certainly not an easy one to find and this copy should appeal to collectors of this cult label and rock fans overall. For those trying to put a Spiral set together, this will be one of the tricky titles that will not show up that often and still possibly, not a great deal better I feel sure, even with the mainly fairly light sound issue.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and for pure good looks and freshness, it will prove beyond difficult to beat. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howards Printers (Slough) Ltd. Like most all the Spiral covers, this one does not wear well and usually is found with rubbing, ring wear, and major sticker tears are also common. This includes the 1970 Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This is a superb front with very moving artwork, one the true classics on this label. This by a distance the very best example I have ever seen. There is a quite faint scuff a little below the Vertigo logo near the top left corner, but as stated, this has removed NO ink, hence it shows very little unless viewed under angled light. Any other blemishes or marks are very faint indeed and with normal full-on viewing, this is near immaculate. Ultra clean, super fresh and highly attractive, no sticker marks and practically crease-free. One tiny corner tip rub on the bottom right but little else, the moving graphic has not faded or aged at all, the lack of grubbiness all great news. Visually up there with the best I have seen for any Swirl cover.

Cover Back: The back is stunning, any blemishes are bordering on minuscule as seen ultra critically under light. Ultra clean, fresh and hugely attractive, the lack of creasing and especially ring wear is near remarkable on this, or any other Vertigo cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Stunning! – yes the exclamation mark used for what is was intended – you will rarely see this centrefold looking this clean and fresh. Quite honestly, it looks practically as made and little to add.

Top Edges:Both very straight with any rub traces tiny and faint.

Bottom Edges: A little patchy, quite light rubbing on the front, the back barely anything, again both are straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is unworn. The back storage edges clean, sharp with any thickening or burring very little and small as seen critically viewed end-ond. This entrance edge guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A supreme spine that again is practically as made. Solid, dead straight, uncompressed and folded square, all all edges meet up flush and parallel. All text is pristine, the spine unfaded or aged, and even the folds are totally unworn. This crucial very wear-prone area will remind of new, how many will survive quite like that?

Corners: All corners have only tiny (most) or very small tip rubs (bottom right). Excellent to near mint shape retained with NO enhancements.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all-round example of this deceptively wear-prone 1970 Spiral cover, one that will prove immenisely difficult to find better. With most being grubby, aged, damaged or torn, often with writing and several marks or ring wear, this classic Vertigo cover should please most collectors. I would be very surprised if this does not prove to be a major upgrade for many – this is one to hold and enjoy – not perfect, but by Spiral standards, almost as close as they are likely to get.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): even with a small window circle tear repair made by myself, this is neatly done. Very mildly aged with of a very little of the usual darkening of the seam adhesive. This is still very fresh and attractive, and unusually white with barely any creasing and two neat window circles and super-clear lining. All edges are unsplit with no repairs needed on these. This one date-coded 1070 (October 1970). I doubt if the record has been removed many times at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Side One: NEAR EXCELLENT (with the aforementioned marks). Side Two: MINT(–): not an easy one to grade overall due to the fine abrasion on side one that I have described fully in my ‘RARITY’ paragraph, please read it. That apart, the record would have been near immaculate and without doubt hardly played. Still an impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A record with modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a super Spiral that should please many collectors, but NOT for the highly discerning as the fine abrasion does sound, more especially near the very beginning of side one, but less so thereafter.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce record offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and fine heavy sound. It has a quiet organ introduction on side one on which the mark does sound most, but when the music gets really going, it is less apparent and more gentle, but still heard on my very revealing system – my LP12 takes no prisoners. I just listened to the music and little worried me after the initial sound, but that purely depends on the sensitivity of the listener – everyone is different, I just wish to make clear and plain, this record has a little mainly gentle surface sound from the mark. Without doubt, this has been played little and it is still likely to give the majority, more played examples around a good run for it’s money. Side two is superb and even with the blemish, few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. After playing many 100s of records in my 13-years+ on Ebay, I have become more tolerant of light imperfections that vinyl will offer sometimes, so this quite light sound did not bother me too much – again, it simply depends on the listener’s tolerance (or intolerance). With the much-mentioned blemish, this is NOT for the audio perfectionist, but vinyl of this vintage are seldom without the odd issue or two. The sound is not really a click, more a light hiss on revolution, not that easy to really describe. So I have no qualms in offering this elusive piece whatsoever, as long as the listing has been read and understood it is not audibly ‘perfect’. With the one mark reservation, this is a wonderful piece I can still recommend to many collectors needing this title. But if ‘silence’ is mandatory, better wait for the near impossible – I cannot be more honest or fairer, I would be more than happy to keep this in my own collection.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
