Here’s a very rare LP by Van Dyke Parks! This is a white label DJ mono promo copy of his first LP, “Song Cycle”. It’s on the Warner Brothers label, number 1727. In 1968, the mono format was deleted by nearly all US record companies. For the most part, the only mono LPs produced after this time were sent to AM radio stations for airplay purposes. This is one of those rare albums. The story behind this record may be familiar to some… after writing the lyrics for the Beach Boys’ aborted Smile album, Parks sought to create an album of his own that would disassociate itself from the contrived pop music of the day. And he did quite a job of it, creating one of the most expensive pop albums ever recorded up to that point. The album was a hit with the critics, but bombed sales-wise. Over the years, it has developed a cult following. The vinyl grades VG+ on side one, and a strong VG++ on side two. Labels are clean. The cover is in nice shape, no seam splits, stickers, tears, or writing. Very, very difficult album to find!! Drop me a message if ebay doesn’t calculate shipping for you.
