~ condition ~

record is in Very Good + Condition* and has been
fully play tested and it sounds great and plays with
no skips, repeats or bad noise except for a few spots on
side 2 (mostly on the first song "Keep On Movin' On ")
there are are small scratches* that cause some fairly light
tics in a few spots but otherwise it plays with occasional
mellow crackle & has shiny clean vinyl with just light wear
(other than the prev. mentioned scratches) & it has
shiny clean wear-free labels

cover is in Very Good Condition with bold bright
printing and has no writing or markings (there is a
promo sticker on the back cover) & while the seams
are all intact, all three edges do have neat clear tape
repairs & otherwise, the cover does have some wear
to the corners & edges plus the plain white background
of the cover has light soiling to it in some places
and the upper-right-corner is cut

displays & plays mostly well

~ review ~

appreciators of '70s blaxploitation cinema consistently
rank Willie Dynamite (1973) among the best that the genre
had to offer. While the story of super pimp "Willie D" may be
typical in terms of over-the-top characterizations, in contrast
to many of its contemporaries, the film's plot is dramatically
guided by a central moral compass. In an ironic twist of fate
the actor who played the notorious Willie Dynamite would
become better-known for his role the following year as Gordon
on the children's television program Sesame Street. The original
motion picture soundtrack was also different than most others
of its ilk, as virtuoso trombonist J.J. Johnson ( whose technique
would influence the likes of Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker)
composed & conducted the score w/ director Gilbert Moses III
penning the lyrics to the motivated urban funk of the title track
"Willie D" & the sensual love ballad "King Midas" & the moody
introspective mid-tempo narrative "Keep on Movin' On." Granted,
Moses isn't the quintessential wordsmith, yet he ably progresses
the story in his prose instead of using the tunes as a momentary
plot diversion. The vocals are supplied by Martha Reeves & the
incidental instrumentals are worth noting as they allow Johnson
room to lay down some truly inspired grooves with names such
as "Willie's Chase" and "Willie Escapes" (both built solidly sturdy
funkified themes) it doesn't take much imagination to guess the
type of action-on-screen fare that Johnson has in mind & it is
"Passion's Dilemma" that stands as one of the more involved cuts
with "Passion" being a character in the film, rather than a descrip-
tion of the song's ambiance. Johnson creates a feeling of palpable
uncertainty & an edginess that takes the melody to a whole other
strata, drawing upon his considerable chops. The shortest song
on the album (clocking in at around 90 seconds) is the suitably
reverential "Gospel Family" consisting of a keyboard duet between
famed West Coast cool jazz ivory tickler Pete Jolly & co-founding
Frank Zappa Mothers of Invention member Ian Underwood

~ Willie Dynamite Plot Synopsis ~

Willie Dynamite (Roscoe Orman) is a Manhattan pimp
whose life and career are documented in this blaxploitation
flick. Willie makes it to the top of his precarious profession only
to hit rock bottom again in record time. In her last movie role
Diana Sands plays an ex-hooker who becomes a social worker
who tries to get Willie to clean up his act before it's too late.
Willie Dynamite was produced by Richard Zanuck and
David Brown who shortly afterward collaborated on
a more upbeat project called The Sting

~ Our Record Condition Guide ~

since everyone has their own ideas about grading the condition
of records, we've decided to spell out how we do it. our descriptions are
also extremely thorough & individually note flaws that a generic condition grade
cannot. we also occasionally assign a + and - for in-between grades

Mint

perfect, never played & usually still factory sealed

Near Mint

nearly perfect with almost no signs of handling

Excellent

the slightest visual wear that in no way interferes with the sound

 Very Good +

light visible signs of handling & wear but well taken care of
and plays with only mellow occasional crackle and/or soft pops but
nothing interfering with enjoying the record/artwork

Very Good

obviously used & handled, but not mishandled, with no skips,
repeats or bad noise, but with noticeable crackle, pops & soft tics or
artwork defects, but nothing too bad overall

 Very Good -

considerable visible wear & background noise with possible
skips, repeats, tics and cover flaws, but still enjoyable & would
be obviously well-used and somewhat mishandled

So-So

anything below VG- which we rarely sell, except
for really rare records that are worth listing only because
they're so hard to find & sought-after in any condition

Disclaimer

not everyone's turntable sounds & functions the same
but we have a nice sensitive set-up that makes flaws very obvious to us
and we try to note everything we ear and see. while vinyl is an awesome sounding format,
there is almost always some sort of background noise while listening to a record.
we are just about as picky as anyone, so trust us
but be sure to read our descriptions carefully!
