In October 1918 pioneering HMV recording engineer Will Gaisberg

undertook an expedition to the front line in France. He returned with

this recording of a gas shell bombardment, along with a dose of

Spanish Flu which killed him just a couple of weeks later.

This record stayed in the HMV Historical catalogue until 1945 but this

is a rare original issue from circa 1919. You can find lots of interesting

information and debate about this record on the internet and it remains

a fascinating historical document of the First World War.
