Label/Format: Island – Original pink label with orange ‘eye’ logo. Deeply ridged and with a beautiful textured finish. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Two beautiful looking examples that have the most stunning ‘real pink’ colour. Both ultra clean, fresh and showing just a couple of tiny spindle marks on side one, and only very light fine ones on two. Still a very snug fit around my LP12 spindle, these vintage labels will seldom be seen looking much better on this scarce title.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The second of two albums this band released in the UK, these on Island and both scarce. A third album ‘Into the Fire’ in 1970 was issued in the United States. Not too easy to pigeon-hole – an instrumental set and with a very strong Hammond organ sound – featuring Mike Weaver – with jazz and blues influences. Featuring a host of cover versions performed in their unique style, this is a very fine and quite unusual Island album. After the split, the members went separate ways, Weaver became a session musician, others joined Juicy Lucy, The Grease Band, Traffic and The Misunderstood. This album would not have been a big seller and is seldom seen or offered. This is a very fine all-round copy overall, the record appears very lightly used only with two very clean and little marked playing surfaces with two superb labels. Most all of any minor surface sound was between a few songs with the music offering very clean and impressive sound. The cover has some creasting but not a great deal else to fault. One many Island and label collectors will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: simply because it has a couple of moderate creases on the front but little real wear at all and still has a reasonably high attractivess factor. A single format that is fully laminated, it was printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain fine shine, fine freshness and clarity, no peeling or significant lifts. One moderate crease near the right bottom front corner, few others and they are lighter and less apparent. Angled viewing under light reveals some fairly light dulling mainly around the thick record’s rim and label areas. With such a thick heavy record inside for around 45 years, that can no real surprise and I would guess most have this as a bare minimum. Viewed full-on, barely anything is seen anyway, the odd fine surface mark apart. There are exposed strips where the laminate ends short of full width (front 1, and back 3), but these vulnerable areas have minimal rubbing or issues. A tiny pin mark near the bottom right corner is largely inconpicuous, overall, a very fine example of this quite elusive early Island cover.

Top Edge: Solid, but thin and straight with hardly any traces of wear.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still quite sharp with very little wear or thickening. Record entered on this right outside back edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with neat and consistent compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and largely crack-free laminate.

Corners: All neat and quite sharp with little wear.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce Island cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better and this possibly undergraded. This elusive sleeve should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a heavy-duty polylined inner that has aged a little with some darkening of the adhesive on the seams. Also some creasing to the right corners. Both window circles are crisp and undamaged with the lining clear. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘British & Other Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on thick heavyweight Pye-pressed vinyl. This appears very modestly played with any surface marks or blemishes few, light, and mostly very light indeed as seen under bright angled light. Side one’s music area almost goes into the label such are the width of these grooves. So-much-so, the matrix numbers on side are partially cut into the actual label rim, that is very unusual indeed. But as most vinyl collectors will know, the wider the grooves, the better the dynamic range of the music, and this one really delivers. Visually a very fine record, and one that does not tolerate abuse well, it should please many, if not most collectors visually and audibly also.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce early Island album plays mostly above it’s clean visual grading with little fault. Very powerful and distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed production. A little light surface sound was noted between a few songs but little affected the loud and punchy sound of the music. A complex recording and with that classic 1960s Hammond organ sound, this tracks effortlessly and overall has great sound that many will admire and appreciate. Nothing of any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this slightly unusual and scarce Island record. I would be quite sure this was no major seller and of the tiny few I ahve seen over time, most have been very tatty and worn. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
