Description
This is an exceptionally RARE item. A 10" acetate recording of Warren Zevon performing his original and unreleased song Warm Rain. Zevon is best known for his classic songwriting and vocal performances on legendary material like Werewolves of London, Excitable Boy, Lawyers Guns and Money and Poor Pitiful Me. This recording dates from a period early in his career(1965-68), a period when Warren was using his nickname "Sandy". In later interviews Warren stated that he used the nickname during his "surfer" period.
Warren was living in Los Angeles in the mid-sixties trying his best to make it as a musician. His first flirtations with success came as a writer for The Turtles and other acts on the White Whale label. It is known that Zevon also used the name Lyme during those early years when singing in a duo called lyme and cybelle. The exeedingly rare acetate offered here is a solo vehicle and is labled "Sandy Zevon". This and its sister "Songbird" acetate(offered in a seperate ebay auction)are two very rare examples of Warren using the Sandy moniker professionally.
The recording of Warm Rain featured on this acetate has Warren singing strongly and playing his piano beautifully. It is a wonderful uptempo pop style song with drums, bass, and acoustic guitar backing. The arrangement is tight and the performance is fabulous, and very sixties sounding. Warren's son Jordan has since recorded his own rendition of this song, and at the time of its release he referred to Warm Rain as a song of his father's that has never been heard by the public. This acetate gives you the chance to hear Warren himself performing a great unreleased recording, and to own what has got to be one of few early Zevon acetates in existence.
This acetate was recorded at Valentine Recording Studios in Hollywood and features the bright red Valentine label. It came from the archive of a veteran L.A. music business insider, who had it in storage for decades. This acetate is guaranteed authentic. It plays through nicely with one brief(miniscule) skip two thirds of the way through that would be easy to fix digitally. There is the usual noise associated with a 1960's acetate recording, but the condition is very good and playable. The label is bright and clear and the disc is flat with no chips or cracks. The surface shows some general wear and scuffing, but overall this disc survived in a good playable state. We offer this incredibly rare item at NO RESERVE.
