Why should this album, originally recorded over thirty years ago, bring such universal praise from those who value cerebral music? Well, simply because gems such as this are so very rare.
Born from the Italian progressive scene, this Neopolitan outfit were guided by the genius of Gianni Leone to produce their opus 'Ys'. Named after a mythical, lost island of the northern hemisphere, it's as difficult, dissonant and demanding a piece of music as you are ever likely to hear.
From the introduction of voices singing and breathing a wordless refrain, to the epilogue, (the intro played backwards), 'Ys' is so crammed with ideas that the brevity of each passage overwhelms you. Like a neutron star, there are enough ideas here to keep several bands going for their whole careers. The drawback to this, of course, is that it's not exactly an easy ride! It IS, though, a piece which demands and rewards careful listening.
Take, for example, 'Epilogo', where, sandwiched between a repeated, classically-inspired overture, played at a virtuoso, breakneck speed, there is a sinister passage containing guitar, played backwards and forwards sounding like a human voice muttering. This is accompanied by human breathing, which floats between the channels, so that this inhaling and exhaling of both instrument and voice combine with astounding effect. Or where, on 'Secondo Incontro', the whole piece seems to have been written backwards, so that the bombastic ending comes before the song! This would have been the first track on side two of the original vinyl release.
The thought that seems to have gone into structuring the album in this way is remarkable, and reminds the listener of an Escher-like existence. Even the addition of the female voice brings no warmth to the proceedings, and, in fact, only serves to discomfort you further.
Like a theatre of the macabre which manages to show humanity as an alien species, 'Ys' is challenging, dark, sinister and utterly compelling, and, without doubt, a work of pure genius.
