The soundtrack to Michelangelo Antonioni's 1970 film Zabriskie Point is one of the more unusual major-label releases of its era — a compilation assembled not around a single artist but around the film's radical collision of cultures. Antonioni commissioned Pink Floyd to write original music for the film, and three of their tracks appear here: Heart Beat, Pig Meat, Crumbling Land, and the side-closing Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up — a reworking of Careful With That Axe, Eugene, stretched into a slow-burning 4:57 that closes the record. The Grateful Dead contribute an excerpt from Dark Star. Jerry Garcia appears solo with Love Scene. John Fahey, Roscoe Holcomb, The Kaleidoscope, Patti Page, and The Youngbloods fill out a tracklist that moves between psychedelic rock, folk, country, and avant-garde — exactly mirroring the film's fractured American landscape.

The film was produced by Carlo Ponti for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and released in early 1970. The soundtrack was issued simultaneously in multiple territories. This is the original Italian pressing — released and distributed in Italy by Dischi Ricordi S.p.A., Milan.

The runout groove on both sides carries the hand-etched date 14.3.70 — March 14, 1970. This is the documented first press indicator for the Italian issue, present only on the earliest copies stamped from the initial lacquers. It is what separates this copy from later Italian pressings of the same catalog number.
