When it comes to album titles Recycler is surely one of the most ill-thought out ever. It appears to act as a deterrent to anyone even vaguely interested in ZZ Top – as if to say don't waste your money on this because it's just a rehashing of ideas we've churned out several times before. We're completely out of inspiration and are quite content to live on past glories.

Instead, Recycler was supposedly a conscious effort to divorce themselves from the MTV generation and return to their old bluesy roots. Unfortunately, they appeared unwilling or unable to let go completely and the mix of boogie and synthesised rock, in the main, fails to ignite. There's no doubting loyal fans of this band have had to be extremely patient and tolerant as their heroes swayed from blues boogie, to MTV darlings, to a hybrid of the two because, for me, this was one dip on the rollercoaster too far.

It would be a simple thing to listen to Recycler with one ear to the speaker and assume it's just business as usual. I'm no musician but I would imagine boogie-woogie rhythms aren't the hardest things to play - it's instilling that down and dirty barroom attitude that gives the music grit and authenticity. A casual listen and you'll capture the superficial gloss that coats this album but delve beneath that and things start getting ugly. The drums have been enhanced by a sequencer so Frank Beard could probably have twiddled a few knobs on a console and retired to the bar to quaff a few cold ones to discover it was job done on his return. Worse though is the fact the band think they can simply continue to tweak the formulaic rhythms and gullible fans will continue to shell out for their product in the shedloads – and they're probably right in that assumption, but it doesn't make the end result any more palatable. Apart from "2000 Blues" everything chugs along in a relentless dirge like a musical perpetual motion machine until you just want to shout "please make it stop!". Thankfully it does eventually grind to a halt with the bland "Doubleback".

"2000 Blues" excepted, the only other track of note on Recycler is "My Head's In Mississippi" which has the grace to at least try to be authentic. Otherwise this album is a total dead loss and, as far as I as concerned,  proved to be the final nail in the coffin.
