Comments: Unplayed numbered copy of this incredibly rare vinyl ethno-document, very much in the Sublime Frequencies vein, released in a miniscule, immediately-vanished Dutch (?) pressing of 100 copies back in 1998. Some barely visible blemishes on the mostly white cover (ink rubbing off from a different cover during storage) which is otherwise perfect. Vinyl is m-. From the original press release:
“The musicians on the record were two unknown old jilali, who arrived one spring day in 1997 at the village of Jajouka in the Jaballah, not far from Ksar El Kbir, in the area known as Ahle Shrif. . . . [T]here is a festival every year in connection with the moslem holiday of Aid El Kbir (The Great Feast), and it was here that the two jilali happened to arrive on their separate journeys, and as it turned out, they had not met for many years. They were received and soon found their way into the music room, a small room, where the musicians liked to hang out, play and gossip. There was an atmosphere of joy in the smoke filled room with much coughing, and in a corner two of the musicians kept on making the mint tea, the national drink of Morocco. And then they commenced to play. The whole night they played with the other musicians and the following afternoon they agreed to let Peter Chilton record them. Here they played a number of songs from their ritual, and once more the sound of the flute soared in the air, while the bendir kept on building to a thundering creszendo. Two formidable musicians at a very special place up high in the mountains of the Jebalah. In front of a vast amount of fellow musicians, who understood every turn and twist in the music and responded to give the recording full authenticity.”
