G. - or GG - or G G or G. G. - Record Company in Birmingham.   Here is a link to a page with info on this rare label:  Alabamalama: G.G. Records - Birmingham Alabama    (Note to ebay: this is strictly a link to information about this 60 year old record label - not an effort to sell anything).   This record is G G # 109/517, featuring BIG BILL BABY sung by "Lucky" Leon Davis accompanied by Lucky Leon Davis and His ROOF RAISERS, backed up by 108/517 MINOR'S BARBECUE, again... sung by Davis and backed by by Davis and his ROOF RAISERS. Both songs published by Golden and licensed thru B.M.I.   The record was produced by Peter Doraine. I do not know who he was but he did a good job here.   Of special interest is the fact that the song MINOR'S BARBECUE is about an actual black-owned restaurant located in Bessemer Alabama. The lyrics to the song (I ALWAYS play my records before grading them and before listing themn on ebay) mention the restaurant's address in Bessemer. So I pulled out my 1953 Greater Birmingham Black Business Directory published by Miles College ... and there it was on page 22, listed under restaurants!   BIG BILL BABY has no connection with Big Bill Broonzy! Lucky's girl friend just likes "expensive" things which result in her causing him to receive big bills! This side has a bit more surface noise than MINOR'S BARBECUE. Both sides are well recorded with good mixing so the music has high definition and a nice balance (especially BARBECUE). There is none of that distortion of loud passages often heard on worn records.    Davis' vocals are quite decent and his small band has more of a saxophone/reedy sound than guitar/bass or brassy sound (though I think there is a trumpet; I know there's a jazzy-like guitar). Labels are somewhat faded & worn but my scanner makes them look a little worse than they actually are. I did adjust the contrast to brighten them up a bit.   Still, collectible condition and - as of today - UNKNOWN to the writer of the short essay about GG records to which I've offered a link, above.   NOTE: some of my scans may have what appear to be scratches and/or pencil scribbles but in actuality those are scratches on the glass bed of my scanner. Please see the scan of the plain green sheet of paper in order to identify them (though they may appear in the scans pointed or oriented differently than they are on the green paper). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ... Thinking of bidding on a copy of STARS FELL ON ALABAMA by Carl Carmer? That's another Alabama book about which ebayers are often misled or misinformed:
