Although, between 1932 and 1948, Schnabel made three recordings each of the Fourth and Fifth Concertos, plus two of the Second, he made only one each of the First (in 1932) and the Third (in 1933).

That said, this 1933 memento is another demonstration of Schnabel's interpretive profundity in Beethoven's keyboard music.

It has never ceased to puzzle me that Schnabel certified Malcolm Sargent to conduct what was, after all, the first complete recording of Beethoven's piano concertos. Sargent had yet to be knighted -- indeed was something of a house conductor at EMI, known to audiences for the ubiquitous red carnation in his lapel, and to a majority of London orchestral players as "Flash Harry." His specialty was those choral engines so dear to British audiences, although now and then he revealed surprising interpretive affinities.

No. 4 has been a classic interpretation -- indeed a benchmark -- since its first release almost 70 years ago, although in both remakes Schnabel's technique remained consistent. For historical perspective as well as spiritual kinship with Beethoven, Schnabel's 1932-35 performances belong in any serious collection. I confess a fondness, too, for Wilhelm Kempff's DGG recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic, although he insisted on playing alien cadenzas in place of Beethoven's, and made no complaint about Ferdinand Leitner as his conductor, in many ways a German counterpart of Malcolm Sargent (without the carnation).

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects, like cracks, chips and scratches, are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a given pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
