Aunt Molly Jackson of Clay County, Kentucky

released c. 1942 by Library of Congress # LC 57 / LC 69

rare original deep groove 78rpm pressing by the 
Library of Congress Division of Music Recording Laboratory
from the Archive of American Folk Song

recorded in 1939 by Alan Lomax who traveled through
the South (United States) collecting field recordings for the
Library of Congress in order to form a permanent record
of the country's musical heritage. In 1942 six volumes of
these (and other) recordings were released on thirty
78s pressed in extremely limited quantities

~ condition ~


in Good + Condition & has been fully play tested
and sounds ok with no skips or repeats & while the record
does play all the way through, it is a bit scratchy but has
no cracks or chips & the sound is still ok despite there
being substantial crackle throughout. the labels are
also a bit worn, but most of the printing is clear

the above is 'stamped' into the dead wax
and each side also has additional #s scrawled
in the dead wax around the outer rim


~ Aunt Molly Jackson ~


Aunt Molly Jackson was a ninth-generation Kentuckian
born in 1880 in Clay County, Ky. who wrote her first song
at the age of four & acquired a repertoire of more than 100
old songs from her great-grandmother Nancy MacMahan
which folklorist Alan Lomax would later record her singing for
the Library of Congress archive. Aunt Molly was a troublemaker
in her youth & was event arrested at age ten & served a little
local jail time for blacking her face with charcoal and donning a
disguise to spook the residents of a neighboring farmhouse
who reported her to the sheriff. She later also became a bit of
a Coal Mining / Union Activist but also worked as a midwife
delivering many babies in her time witnessing the impoverished

situation of neighboring mining families & many of her protest
ballads deal with sick & starving Kentucky Coal Miners and
Jackson was also involved in many Ky. labor strikes. Later on
in the 1930s she moved to New York City where she also did
activist work in addition to writing & recording music and
became quite a personality. She died in 1960

this music is a deep and vital part of American
Folklore & while the sound quality of "field recordings"
like this is a bit rough, one cannot detract from the power
of this music recorded by ordinary people in their
ordinary settings (here in southern prisons)
