Scarce early US issue of these recordings of Jolivet conducting his own works, the highlight of which is the avant garde Ondes Martenot Concerto. The Martenot (depicted beautifully on the cover) is an early electronic keyboard instrument with glissando and vibrato controls and a unique proto-synthesizer sonority and reverberation; it was invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot with a design partly based on the Theremin, and has recently received renewed interest due to its use by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Here the Martenot is played by Ginette Martenot, sister of Maurice; its sound stays well in front and is not at all smothered by the orchestra. Lily Laskine plays harp in the other Concerto. Jolivet conducts the Orchestre du Theatre National de l'Opera.
