·      NOTE: ATCO  used three (3) different catalog numbers for this album: the first number is 33-200, which is found only on original, withdrawn version with “Baby don’t scold me” ; the second number 33-200-A was used on the more common version with “For what it’s worth” instead of “Baby don’t scold me” and the third number: 33-201-A was used on all post-1969 pressings on yellow ATCO label (all of which, of course, have “For what it’s worth”). What we have here is the very first catalog number: 33-200.

The band themselves were displeased with this record, feeling that the production did not capture their on-stage energy and excitement. Yet to most ears, this debut sounds pretty great, featuring some of their most melodic and accomplished songwriting and harmonies, delivered with a hard-rocking punch. "For What It's Worth" was the hit single, but there are several other equally stunning treasures. Stephen Stills' "Go and Say Goodbye" was a pioneering country-rock fusion; his "Sit Down I Think I Love You" was the band at their poppiest and most early Beatlesque; and his "Everybody's Wrong" and "Pay the Price" were tough rockers. Although Neil Young has only two lead vocals on the record (Richie Furay sang three other Young compositions), he's already a songwriter of great talent and enigmatic lyricism, particularly on "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," "Out of My Mind," and "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong." The entire album bursts with thrilling guitar and vocal interplay, with a bright exuberance that would tone down considerably by their second record.

·      THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD (VG).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some visible ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 5 (back side)

-       The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4 x 1 inches in size)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-       Cover has a partially split top seam (more than 10 inches / 22 centimeters) ; This split seam was sloppily taped by the previous owner with 2 pieces of transparent scotch tape (which may be possible to remove)

-       Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-       Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top and bottom seams.

-       Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged

-       Back cover has a tiny peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1/16th square inch in size)

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)
