'Patel Rap', the super-hit track that defined a new genre in Hindi-Pop in the 1990s, was a song rapped by Kenya-born Bali Brahmbhatt and produced by another Kenya-born musician Kuljit Bhamra. The song was co-written by Bali, Kuljit and D. Knowles. The song celebrates the Indian shopkeeper (dukawala), whose personality remains the same whether in India, East Africa, USA or UK, selling just about anything everything household. Patels are known for their business acumen in retail and the song is based on their nostalgic ways of business. Born, in 1952 in Nairobi, Bali spent his early life in Kenya, amongst Asian and African friends and became fluent in many languages – Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati and Swahili, which reflected in the music he produced when he migrated to the United Kingdom, but now established in the heart of Bollywood - Mumbai. He has since become a popular singer and sang many hit songs for films, besides churning out his own music albums. Kuljit, also born in Nairobi, in 1959, but moved to UK at the age of 2. As a prolific multiple-award-winning composer, he has written some of the best hits of the golden age of Punjabi music in the 1980s and 1990s – having worked for the popular Punjabi bands 'Alaap', 'Azaad', 'Premi' and 'Heera'. The self taught composer, producer and tabla player is credited with spearheading the Bhangra movement in the UK, and has recorded up to 2,000 songs to date!
