August is a big month for River.Dog Records as I sell a fair chunk of some of my rarest records, starting this week, there will be some big hitters of loads of genres, PROG, PSYCH, BEAT, FOLK etc. etc. etc.  Today there are such records of Legendary rarity as DOGFEET, some mid hitters too, like Vertigo swirl rarity Dr Strangely Strange's Heavy Petting (mislabelled version!), some very limited and highly sought after private presses, such as the extremely elusive (and lovely) TICKAWINDA, there will be Psych/Freakbeat rarities covered next week with such items as the extremely rare Yardbirds German EP Heart Full Of Soul, The Eyes UK single Man With Money, unheard of UK pressings of Linda Van Dyck (Seduction Song), to my knowledge NEVER released in the UK, and never documented, but there's a UK demo "A" copy (on Gemini Records) going to show it's self this month! And other undocumented demo UK psych 7"s such as, did you ever wish The Crystal Mansion pressed their often talked about track "The Thought Of Loving You" in the UK... well, another original yet to my knowledge undocumented, "A" label demo coming up this month! Plus where would record collecting of the 50s/60s/70s be without some extremely rare Beatles pressings thrown in for good measure,SOLID CENTRES of early UK singles, to my knowledge undocumented overseas presses (has anyone seen a South Rhodesian "Ain't She Sweet", with scroll Polydor labels and a tri-centre? I could be wrong, but I certainly never have caught wind of it on any forums!), Gold Label, Red Labels, Box Set, etc... And some surprises thrown in! Although some of the grades of these items this week sound high, I hope you can believe that I know what I'm talking about, as this is most of the cream of my PROG/PROGRESSIVE-PSYCH FOLK LP crop, please refer to my feedback if you are at all unsure about my grading "pedigree!" please refer to my previous feedback comments, each year I have a bit of a clear out, (though this year I'm doing more major titles than previous years!, this year, as with every other year, I have only had positive feedback (I have NEVER had a negative comment either publicly or privately about my grading), the only grading related comments I get (both privately and publicly on my feedback) are telling me my grading is too far under what it should be, I have tried to take this on-board, but I always want customers to be completely satisfied. But please check my previous feedback (from the past few months and previous years), and judge for yourself! I don't like the idea (though it has never happened to me) of people asking for partial money back etc, so if you find anything amiss with my descriptions then I will offer full bid price back (upon return of the item in the condition I sent it in- I fully record all LPs before listing them for my digital collection!), though to avoid time wasters I will put the proviso in that I will not pay for postage unless there is a definite mistake in my listing… I really hope that all sounds reasonable! For a few weeks I have been promising some real rarities, and this week I am listing some of the very rarest records that I have encountered. This week I am mainly listing PROG/LATE 60s PSYCH/FOLK, however, next week, as promised I am going to list some extremely rare Psych/Freakbeat and BEATLES, some items which have NEVER come up for sale before, or been catalogued anywhere! I thought I'd start this week's listings off with a rare Beatles LP, A) to get interest in this week's listings (there are MEGA-RARITIES such as TICKAWINDA/ DOGFEET etc, and some very hard hitters also in Vertigo Swirl Rarity Dr. Strangely Strange Heavy Petting, there are also some private presses 1st presses, undocumented LPs etc.)
This then is the 2nd (Rarer) Gold Parlophone pressing of the Beatles 1st LP, Please, Please Me from 1963, with the shadowed Gold Palophone label, and  the significantly rarer transitional "Northern Songs" Credit of publishing rights for I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Do You Want To Know A Secret, and There's A Place, whilst the fist 4 sides of the first 2 singles, Love Me Do/ P.S I Love You/Please Please Me, and Ask Me Why are all still credited to Dick James. These presses were the very last runs of this LP, pressed for an incredibly limited time before they changed over to the yellow Parlophone labels (very briefly transitioning through the also very rare "extra 33 1/3 copies").
I shall not beat about the bush, as is often the case, this is not a great copy, it has many surface marks, and some more significant ones, and one NASTY looking scratch on side 1 (at about 6 o'clock- see photo), I really had my doubts about this one, however, it transpires that however bad it looks, it isn't deep, and, whilst there are a fair few clicks pops, "fts" etc. throughout play, this does play through from start to finish without jumps/sticks etc etc etc! Amazing, I have tried it on a number of players with different weights of stylus, and it still plays! But be warned, I really don't suggest using your best stylus on this one! This has the MT tax code in centre of the side 2, and  1L/12GO mother/stamper codes. I shan't grade this in the conventional sense, as it visually wouldn't even pass as G for me, but it does play through! It didn't have it's original inner sleeve, so I have given it a new one, nice crisp poly lined "Emitex" "Patents Applied For" "Made in Great Britain", Thats's in really crisp condition at least! As with most of these earliest Ernest J Day & Co sleeves, this is not the best at all, though it is the original with most left aligned "Photo: Angus McBean" text, though that's hard to tell! The bottom tab has come off, and the spine is barely legible reading "Pleas…lease M…." The top edge mainly holds, there's a little 1" rip 1/2 was up the front edge of the opening mouth. A few little stains here and there, not a great copy though! I have a different copy of this early cover I could substitute at the winning bidder's wish, which is missing the very top left corner and has a rip from the top edge down to John's neck, but the bottom flip-back tab is present (if not attached at the back!), and the left aligned Photo credit is MUCH clearer… It's up to the winning buyer!
