Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and light+ spindle marks.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 148 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Much more elusive and quite rare on the original blue labels. Most seen are on the black format. This being an ultimate first issue, heavy pressed with superb record and sound. The fragile, wear-prone cover very attractive also. The really early ones found like this are very difficult.

Brief Info: Fourth album by the kings of ‘swamp rock’, this one is a true classic and arguably the very best in their wonderful early catalogue. Any evergreen gem featuring one of the most distinctive vocalists in rock, John Fogerty, this band could do little wrong at this time and were very popular. That said, this album is not found in top conditions too often especially on the original blue format Liberty label. The cover always wears badly and the popular record so often played into submission. This is a fantastic copy with a super cover with few clues to its great age. The record has been played, but modestly and carefully and sounds near perfect and will never be easy to find better. Ten songs are featured and all are marvellous, the more well-known songs sounding so much better on the proper album rather than compilations, this is an album to savour. The highlight apart from the classic single ‘Fortunate Son’ is the six-and-half-minute ‘Effigy’ which brings this stunning album to a perfect close.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: A highly attractive EX, and with its potential for wear this is probably undergraded at that. It’s a single, unlaminated format with a lovely finely textured finish, the card is very soft and delicate and has a thin construction. This was printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd, London. With the main faces looking this neat, this sets a high standard.

Cover Front & Back: In terms of real wear, both sides have little and that is no mean feat. The lack of rubbing to the soft textured, thin card is unusual to say the least and the lack of ringwear the same. There is a fine crease near the top right corner area, any others are very fine, few and faint and there is no grubbiness. The bottom corner tips have probably been tipped-in by the particular original owner, but small and subtle - I have no qualms in that personally when done well and that is the owner’s priviledge I guess. Both of these unforgiving surfaces have no sticker marks or speckle to the raised fine texturing and given the sheer vulnerability and age of this lightweight cover (that bends when held with one hand, so avoid), this has survived most all of the perils of age, handling and storage has to offer it.

Top Edge: Ultra faint rub traces, but look very hard.

Bottom Edge: This looks very neat but being the rest edge I feel it had rubbed. The original owner has clearly enhanced this by very neat tipping-in. I will always mention this if I feel this has been done or suspect it to be the case, I think this to be only edge on this fragile cover apart from corner tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but quite thin and delicate, reasonably straight with some fairly minor compressions. There is a little light rubbing towards the ends but all the text shows barely any wear which on this cover is quite unusual.

Corners: All very neat with fine shape, tiny tip tip-ins likely to very likely.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better especially with a first pressed blue Liberty record inside. This very attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: This copy includes the Polydor style, polylined inner which is date coded 0270. This is super EX++ condition, only slightly downgraded because it has darkened a little with age. The edges unsplit and with a super-neat window and secure lining. The lack of creasing is impressive and even the top opening edge is incredibly neat and unburred.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX does this wonderful record scant justice. It has little more than ultra fine and faint surface traces and hairlines that have no sound at all. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed on thick vinyl. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence backed up lovely clean sound. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce original blue labelled Liberty record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, undistorted sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played fairly lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
