This beautiful LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 230, French pressing, red/silver large dog semi-circle label – ED1, stereo, dowel spine) entitled “Pages Immortelles · Album 2” features legendary pianist Gyorgy Cziffra in a mixed recital, most of the selections encore-like pieces, warmly recorded at the Salle Wagram, Paris, in January 1958. 

The exact contents are as follows:

Schubert (arr. Tausig): Marche Militarie in D-flat Major, D.733 No.1

Mendelssohn: Scherzo in E Minor, Op. 16 No. 2

Chopin: Waltz in D-flat Major, Op. 64 No. 1

Chopin: Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9 No. 2

Chopin: Prelude in B-flat Minor, Op. 28 No. 16

Liszt: La Campanella

Liszt: Waltz From "Faust" Act 2

Grieg: Butterfly, Op. 43, No. 1

Rachmaninov: Prelude In G Minor, Op. 23, No. 5

Debussy: La fille aux cheveux de lin

Rossini (arr. Cziffra): La Danza

Like a thoroughbred out of the gates, Cziffra’s playing is a marvel of strength, beauty, and spirit – simply stunning. In fact, following the release of Cziffra’s Chopin Etudes, malicious rumors circulated in some quarters of studio gimmickry being the only plausible explanation for a level of virtuosity simply unheard of. These were resoundingly dispelled by concert performances by Cziffra (also captured on film), and even today they continue to astonish.

A true keyboard maverick, Cziffra will likely continue to divide opinion, but what cannot be doubted was the prodigiousness of his talent, and his sheer generosity of spirit.  Not all of his recordings could serve as library recommendations, but many others demand to be heard.

There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Jacques Seiller, printed in French only. The lovely cover design is uncredited. This album was produced by Norbert Gamsohn and engineered by Paul Vavasseur.

PLEASE NOTE:

These La Voix de son Maitre “baguette” issues with the dowel spine are quite heavy – even with minimal packaging, prepared for shipping they weigh over 600 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $30 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $33 USD. Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else. Anyway, all this to say that those who feel the price is high need to take the cost of shipping into account. CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the heavy 'baguette'-style jacket is EXCELENT. There is light edgewear and shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright and highly attractive – an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT. There is some crinkling where the dowel meets the paper sleeve, but that is all.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is occasional light surface noise, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
