Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format, that has the original ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the label rims. Later pressings had this changed to the EMI text.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and fresh with just two or three very light and faint spindle traces. A very unusual sight on this popular rock classic.

Cat Number: SHVL 793.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good solid weight for this one, later pressings considerably thinner.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but a complete, early issue copy that appears very lightly played are less easy. The beautiful, but very fragile and wear-prone cover also very hard to find without considerable wear or damage. This is a lovely all-round example.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second of four absolute classics this legendary heavy band made and their final one for Harvest. Following the magnificent high standards of In Rock this was never going to be easy, but Fireball does just that. Some songs with less volume and more refined, but still some wonderful rockers – none better than the stunning ‘The Mule’, with it’s monumental drumming from Paice. This excellent set was a great prelude to the classics Machine Head and the blistering double live set Made in Japan. Featuring their undisputed classic line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice, this is one of the band’s most treasured albums and beautifully packaged too. This one complete with a little wear, but my pictures possibly do not do justice to the cover, a flash will always highlight blemishes more than are seen for real – this is a strong all-round example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with ALL surfaces finely textured, not only that, the card is quite soft and delicate and it simply does not wear well (to say the least). The black finish making it near impossible to find devoid of some wear. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The lyric insert and Harvest inner are also included.

Cover Front: Very nice indeed with only a little gentle surface rubbing near the spine edge with traces elsewhere very light and faint. Deep colour and the comet artwork of the band looks fantastic. No scuffs, sticker marks or creases, this classic front will take a lot of beating, and put into true context, this is almost exceptional.

Cover Back: The back is even more prone to wear as the record will press into it causing ring wear in most cases. This one has almost excepted any with the merest hint of a trace near the left edge (but look very hard). A few fine and faint edge hairline surface creases show little and as light as they ever get. Barely any rubbing on this side at all with any speckle traces minuscule. This back is not almost exceptional – it IS exceptional.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault, any rub traces are very light indeed and this looks equally as impressive as the outer faces.

Top Edges: Both straight with barely any rubbing at all – I am almost sure of no tipping-in either.

Bottom Edges: Pretty much the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear at all, any thickening or burring minusule. Record enters on the back edge, both untrimmed. The front has come unstuck but very neatly, so-much-so, I decided to leave it alone. The can easily be sealed using PVA, but on such soft card, it can cause ‘curl’, and as this edge is so straight, I thought better left as is.

Spine and Text: Quite solid (for soft card), straight with some consistent compression. Folded a little off-square, so the edges are not quite parallel. The red text unfaded but some gentle rub traces on the centre area making it appear a little less sharp. The Cat. Number text is perfect. Overall rubbing to the black surface is very little and light, and even the folds retain practically all ink. I have scrutinised this very closely, if there are any tip-ins of chips, they are tiny, few and barely even conspicuous. I will always mention if any are suspected, but even now I am uncertain.

Corners: Any tip rubs are quite small and light, with very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A cover of this colour and softness will always have to be put into context, and few will better this significantly. A really fresh, clean and attractive example that retains rich deep colour and minimal wear or ageing. It will never be easy to find a great deal better, especially with a Gramophone rim record inside.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): indeed, I would have added the extra (+) if the seams had not got the usual darkening of the adhesive, which here is near moderate. But not a great deal else to fault on what is still a very attractive Harvest polylined promotional inner. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): again, often missing. This little short of as made with just a microscopic tone spot and a hint of a gentle edge crease. Printed both sides and they are practically as clean and fresh as manufacture day, this guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks very fine and faint indeed and there are NO penetrating scratches at all. Under bright light, fine ‘brush’ traces are seen, often the result of dry cloth cleaning, totally harmless and barely even visible with normal viewing. This should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavy rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading for practically all with just the merest trace of degrading on a couple of seconds of ‘Anyone’s Daughter’ – this being played on one of the world’s most revealing turntables, and being somewhat critical too. This has very little to fault and this is still a very impresisve, early cut record. Strong, rich sound with all the detail you would expect from a Harvest EMI-pressed original. Barely even a hint of any other surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted. Some incredible detail and the percussion on ‘The Mule’ takes the breath away. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic Deep Purple album that gave a great account of itself for near all duration. Ultimate detail and sonic delivery, nothing beats a first issue and this is very well pressed with no inherent cutting or pressing noises. One I enjoyed immensely on play-grade with just the smallest of reservation for the purist on the briefest of seconds on the end of side one. On less sensitive equipment, any blemishes are even less likely to even register, and I feel sure this lovely set will please many, if not most collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
