This lovely LP from Mercury (MG50153, US pressing, plum/silver label – CC FR1 stampers, mono) features conductor Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra in a brilliant all-Respighi program, vividly recorded at Watford Town Hall, London, in July 1957.

Of the Mercury CD re-issue, the eminent critic Ivan March wrote for the February 1991 issue of The Gramophone:

"For the other two Respighi works, Mercury came to London and the warmer ambience of Watford Town Hall. Gli uccelli is a delight. It has been recorded a number of times since this pioneering 1957 version, but it is remarkable how well the LSO playing and the Mercury sound can match other performances. Whether in the delicacy of ''The dove'' or the more boisterous ''Hen'', the presentation is delightful and the ritornello which begins and ends the suite has a genial rhythmic lift. The Impressioni brasiliane is the weakest work here, most notable for the central movement, ''Butantane'', with its slithering snakes and hints of the Dies irae. But it is worth an occasional hearing and, played and recorded with plenty of colouristic character, it can be regarded as a bonus for the rest of the programme."

There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by James Lyons, provided in English only. The striking cover photo is uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is miniscule wear at corners, but really that is all – a very fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
