Description

Up for bid is the 4 minute Edison Blue Amberol cylinder record #1606 "Silent Night", sung by Elizabeth Spencer, John Young & Frederick J. Wheeler with orchestra. Released November/December 1912, this record is in great condition, really clean with only some minor splitting around the bottom end. Plays well and sounds good. Record comes in a Blue Amberol box and lid with high quality reproduction label and title slip.

"Silent Night" (the original German version being "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht") is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. In 1859, the Episcopal priest John Freeman Young published the English translation that is most frequently sung today, using three of Gruber's original six verses.
