Johnny Jackson - Fiddle. The popularity of bluegrass gospel mui to grow and flourish. Through the ye< bands as a rule have included gospel songs as | their shows. However, there are a growing groups that strictly play gospel today. The Christian has been wi Vocally The Christian Quartet centers around the singing of brothers, Jay, Ray, and Alvin Shaw. During their youth the three brothers played rock and roll music, but they moved to gospel several years ago, Musical influences include uncles, aunts, and especially their mother, Olene Shaw. Their move to gospel came as a result of a spiritual need in their lives to sing the gospel. Jay plays guitar and contributes most of the lead singing for the group. Ray predominately sings baritone and plays the mandolin. He also wrote three of the eight original numbers on this album. Alvin adds the bass and the bass vocals for the band. The fourth voice of the quartet is usually filled by the jfroma timer banjo and igh the years. He m Quartet for over two years ar. Olen, like the Shaw brothers, makes his y County. Most of the bluegrass instrumentation is rendered by veterans Cullen Galyean and John Jackson. Their musical experience and expression is considerable. tllen has performed with groups that include Charlie Mon and Ralph Stanley. During the 1970’s, his band, The Foot Hill Boys played traditional bluegrass as it is rarely heard. A sampling of this fine music is available on County LP 731. Cullen wrote four of the songs for this album and sings the lead on his “I Traded The Bottle For A Bible.” This stirring song is deeply personal, relating his turn to Christianity. Cullen provides banjo, dobro, and guitar accompaniment for the group. He resides in Low Gap, North Carolina. John Jackson is originally from Jonesboro, Tennes- see. He started his musical career with his brother, the late Roma Jackson. John has performed and recorded with bands that include Alex Campbell and Olabelle Reed, and Ted Lundy and The Southern Mountain Boys. He and Cullen can also be heard on Folkways FS 3829 as The Virginia Mountain Boys. John plays fiddle, guitar, and dobro for the Christian Quartet and sings lead on his own “My Daddy Was A Preacher.” This song recalls the ministry of his father, the late J. R. Jackson. John resides in Woodlawn, Virginia. This is the fourth album by the Christian Quartet. Their music can best be described as country' bluegrass gospel. The smooth blending of the country styled voices of the Shaw brothers with the superb bluegrass instrumentation gives the group its own sound. A sound that is in much demand throughout the eastern United States. The Christian Quartet display dedication: the music is there, as well as its message.
