Fountains of Wayne was an American rock band that formed in New York City in 1995. The band is best known for its 2003 Grammy-nominated single "Stacy's Mom".
This debut album from Fountains of Wayne is actually, first and foremost, songwriters Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger writing and recording songs spontaneously and without too much seriousness. The other actors on the album were initially hired as guest musicians. The album was recorded over just one week's time, and there is actually a refreshing unpretentiousness to it with several catchy upbeat melodies.
There's lots of guitar; both acoustic and electric, and the term power-pop fits right in. If you are into this genre, you will most likely enjoy the album.
There are many catchy tracks; a selection of my favorites, "Radiation Vibe"; an upbeat power-pop track. "Sink to the Bottom" is more subdued, with a nice chorus. "She's got a Problem" is almost Buddy Holly style. "Sick Day" has nice acoustic guitar and nice melody. "Leave the Biker" is melodically catchy and sounds like a single, which it was not. "You Curse at Girls" is melodic mid-tempo; again with acoustic guitar.
Among those mentioned ,”Radiation Vibe” and ”Sink to the Bottom” were released as singles. Other singles were the rocking "Survival Car" and "Barbara H". The first three did very well on the charts.
All in all, it's a very refreshing album; nice sounding and with good melodies.
