Description
Genesis : Nursery Cryme
This large 'Mad Hatter' vinyl is the first pressing after the famous 'Pink Scroll' one and has the B&C credit on both labels. This is known as a 'transition' pressing as the 'B&C' credit was soon replaced with 'Phonogram' and is very collectable today. It plays very impressively and the textured gatefold is in superb 'as new' condition, it is stunning.

The audio on S1 is Ex+ (Near Mint in many sections / two seconds on track 1 is G+)

Visual grading
The vinyl has been very well looked after down the years. It retains a lovely glossy sheen and has only a small number of faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side and there are no scratches. There are a couple of very tiny marks on S1 but they have no bearing on the audio. Overall a very clean first pressing on the large 'Mad Hatter' label.
Play grading
The quality of the intro on 'The Musical Box' is one of vinyl of hardly played and the clarity is very impressive. There is only some very light intermittent static that is very much in the background. About three minutes in there are two rather loud pops although I cannot find for the reason for this on the vinyl. A shame because apart from that the music is superb! Indeed the first loud instrumental section plays with incredible power and depth. There are a few static sounds in the final quiet section but as the music builds the sound is superb and the closing section plays with awesome power again and no distortion. A stunning end. 'For Absent Friends' plays very clearly with only some light static in the background here and there, just a little more towards the end but there are non clicks or pops. 'The Return Of The Giant Hogweed' is incredibly good here! There is barely any static and the depth and sonic quality is first class and there is no let up in quality as the track progresses. The piano section towards the end is nigh on perfect and the crescendo ending is absolutely sublime. The power and range is superb and it plays 'as new'. No distortion - wow what an end! This is 'high end' audio without doubt.
'Seven Stones' has some static on the first few seconds and then plays very clearly with barely any 'background'. The first chorus plays in breathtaking fashion with no 'background' or distortion. From then on the track has only a couple of obvious static sounds and plays with superb precision and power and again the end section is particularly impressive. 'Harold The Barrel' plays as close to perfection as you will find. There is just no interference of any kind and easily grades as Mint- the audio is that good. You rarely find 'Harlequin' playing perfectly because it is a relatively quiet track but this version is a very impressive one. There is minimal static and there is nothing that distracts you from the listen. The slow build up on 'The Fountain Of Salmacis' has great clarity and very little static and continues in the same style. There are two light clicks at the beginning of the second verse but that is the only interference of note. From then on it plays extremely well with no other 'background'. There is just minimal distortion on the top end every now and then but it really is very minimal. It still plays loud and true with great power. The closing section is stunning and provides a superb ending to the album.
In summary this very early B&C credit large Mad Hatter version plays with exceptional audio for the vast majority. Yes there are a couple of clicks on each side but there is no other obvious interference besides that. The textured gatefold is in superb condition and is one of the 'cleanest' I have seen in a long time - it is almost as new!
The Gatefold
The fully textured E.J. Day gatefold is in superb condition and I haven't seen one as clean as this for many a year. The edges and wide spine are 'as new' and have no shelf wear. It is so rare for a spine to be as good as this and the gatefold has obviously hardly ever been opened. It has no crease lines or wear and the black print stands proud and again looks 'shop fresh'. There is barely any corner wear which is mega rare, just a couple of tiny barely visible 'rubs' that are hardly worth mentioning! It really is difficult to find a negative, this is one stunning cover! The opening edge is as close to perfect as is possible, just one mega tiny 'ding', and the front and back covers are beautifully clean with no marking at all. The inside of the gatefold is immaculate and is again 'shop fresh'. I actually think this is the best example of this cover I have ever seen and I cannot stress how hard it would be to find one as good as this! A fantastic example!!
Inner sleeve
The plain white die-cut sleeve has no rips or tears just some mild creasing.
The labels
The large 'Mad Hatter' labels are extremely clean and have no marking or writing and only a small amount of spindle wear.

This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
